Tales of Vesperia £17.95 @ Zavvi [XBox 360 Games]

Tales of Vesperia £17.95 @ Zavvi [XBox 360 Games]

The beautiful tenth instalment in the much loved Tales series is rarely seen for less than £30, so with a price of £17.95, Zavvi are offering yet another fantastic deal. The next best offer is from Gamestation and, with a mark up of £17, it’s nearly double the price!

In the land of Terca Lumireis, the people rely on blastia, a kind of ancient technology, for virtually every aspect of life. When the blastia that ensures the residents of his village have fresh water to drink is stolen, Yuri Lowell sets off with his canine pal to recover it but soon finds himself embroiled in a political conflict that has far reaching consequences which may affect the fate of the entire world.

While this story is not a particularly original one, it is interesting and compelling enough to keep you guessing throughout the impressive length of the game. Similarly the characters are charming and brought to life with some lovely voice acting, helping to keep you emotionally invested in their struggles.

The game is delightfully presented, with cel-shaded character models in very pretty environments, all washed in a pastel array of colours. While it’s sometimes to easy to pull off victories with just a furious bout of button bashing, the real time battle system makes combat nonetheless fast, slick and very enjoyable.

Tales of Vesperia is great fun to play and definitely one of the better JRPGs available on the current generation of consoles. You may want to hurry as copies are bound to be snatched up at this bargain price.

Metro 2033 Preorder £29.95 @ Zavvi [XBox 360 Games]

Metro 2033 Preorder £29.95 @ Zavvi [XBox 360 Games]

4A Games’ Metro 2033 is due for release on the 19th of March but you may do well to take advantage of Zavvi’s excellent pre-order price. At just £29.95, it knocks a fiver off the next best deal from Cool Shop.

Preordering with Zavvi also allows you access to a free exclusive XBox Live avatar item.

Metro 2033 is a first person shooter based on the novel Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, which encompasses survival horror and RPG elements. The game takes place in the subway of a post-apocalyptic Moscow. In 2013 international events rocked the world and turned its surface into a nightmareish wasteland, in the midst of this devastation, a  few survivors who were able to find sanctuary in Moscow’s underground.

The player takes on the role of Artyom, born just before the great disaster struck and raised underground. With tensions high and conflict common between the inhabitants of the different station cities that have sprung up in the Metro system, you have never ventured beyond the limits of your own. Until now, that is.
The game aims for hyper realism, with virtually no HUD, meaning that you must rely on the blood splatters that appear on screen to determine how much damage you have taken. When on the surface, you must wear a gas mask but are given no indication of how much time you have until the mask’s filters will give out so it is up to you to keep a close eye on the time. Should you need direction you can check a map but you remain vulnerable as you do so. Guns are usually make-shift bastardisations from salvaged parts and in this brave new world bullets are the only currency, making life doubly tough and handing the player some interesting dilemmas.

Previews suggest that Metro 2033 may well be a great game, thanks largely to what looks to be a strong narrative, enveloping dark atmosphere and excellent dialogue.

Heavy Rain & Dual Charging Station £39.99 @ Argos [PS3 Games]

Heavy Rain & Dual Charging Station £39.99 @ Argos [PS3 Games]

Heavy Rain is a rare thing indeed. Quantic Dreams has delivered a cross-genre masterpiece that’s receiving rave reviews from all sides and deserves the attention of any PS3 owner. Argos are currently stocking Heavy Rain for £39.99 with a free Dual Charging station (worth £9.99 by itself), which is a great piece of kit. Note that you can get the game slightly cheaper from DVD.co.uk (£36.95), but the net saving is over £6 from Argos if purchased with the Charging Station.

Be sure to select the charging station in ‘Special Offers’ before checking out!

Heavy rain is a hybrid of point  ‘n’ click adventure, interactive thriller and Warioware-esque minigames. It may sound like an unlikely combination, but it delivers one of the most profoundly thought-provoking and disturbing experiences in videogame history. By tapping into the primal fear of losing a loved one, Heavy Rain is capable of wrenching some genuinely complex emotions out of you. Many games can make you jump, but Heavy Rain makes you think about the consequences of every decision… as well as making you jump out of your skin every once in a while. The dreaded Quick Time Events are handled extremely well as they perfectly emulate the action occurring onscreen, and its relatively short length is offset by the fact that every plot decision can be played out in multiple ways (thus providing a serious amount of replay value).

Check out Brendan’s full review for more detailed analysis of Quantic Dreams’ magnum opus.

The charging station is also a handy bit of gaming gear, allowing you to charge two controllers simultaneously whilst keeping them them in easy reach. This is the perfect opportunity to save some money as well as nabbing one of the PS3’s killer apps!

Red Faction Guerilla £10.47 @ Tesco [Xbox 360 Games]

Red Faction Guerilla £10.47 @ Tesco [Xbox 360 Games]As Emma pointed out on her HUKD post, deals for Red Faction: Guerrilla on the Xbox 360 have been quite sparse compared to those for the PS3. So if you’ve been keeping an ear to the ground for a decent price for the 360 version, you might be interested to know that it’s now going for £10.47 from Tesco Entertainment. Even though the next best price comes in at a little more on Shopto at £11.97, they are currently out of stock, and after that you’re looking at £12.99 for a brand new copy.

But despite how much fun it is to play, Red Faction: Guerrilla is a game with a few big flaws. The open-world environments feel hollow, lack dynamism, and are just light years away from the kind of bustling metropolises you get in games like Assassins Creed and GTA IV. The story is, well, tacky and the voice acting hilariously dire. The buildings and architecture are also pretty poor (apparently after incorporating a realistic destruction engine, the developers found their buildings collapsing under the weight of real world physics). But that said, the game does compensate you with some thoroughly entertaining gameplay moments which won’t fail to strike a chord with everyone’s inner yearning to ‘blow sh** up’.

Anyone who remembers the old Red Faction from way back in 2001 will already know that this is a game all about destruction. Set on a Total Recall-style – futuristic – Mars, the player takes control of Alec Mason, a normal guy just looking to make a living, who suddenly finds himself embroiled in a major uprising. Tired of being oppressed by the EDF (Earth Defence Force), the Martian citizenry have united into a rebel force called Red Faction and are attempting to wrestle back control of the planet’s six sectors.

As I said before, the story is not exactly what you would call moving, and it’s unlikely you’re going to be investing much emotional energy in the plight of Mars’ oppressed population. RFG’s unique selling point is simply the fact you can blow everything to hell – and a lot of reviewers do say that although great at first, the novelty soon wears off. However RFG is still very impressive in terms of content. There are loads of weapons and vehicles and some big environments to explore. It’s not what you’d call a critically acclaimed masterpiece, but who cares when it’s still a lot of fun.

Saw: The Videogame £17.93 @ The Hut [Xbox 360 Games]

Saw: The Videogame £17.93 @ The Hut [Xbox 360 Games]Whilst it’s easy to disregard Saw’s videogame adaptation as another shallow attempt to milk more money out of a commercial film franchise – like those God awful Blair Witch titles. Saw: The Videogame actually manages to reinterpret the edgy atmosphere of the movies with an ounce of credibility, and offers up some interesting gameplay moments. In fact, it’s no exaggeration to say that the game probably surpasses some of those later films with their tediously twisting plotlines. So if you’re into survival horrors, Saw is certainly worth a look, especially as it’s currently going for £17.93 from The Hut which is the cheapest deal available by well just under £6.

Like the films– the whole idea of which seemed to evolve from the Toe Cutter scene at the end of Mad MaxSaw: The Videogame sees the player navigating their way through a variety of deadly brain teasers. Assuming the role of detective Tapp, the player finds themselves trapped in an insane asylum by the psychopath Jigsaw who (almost like some omnipotent god) guides Tapp through the facility and its various horrific puzzle like contraptions.

The tension and suspense is competently heightened by the developers throughout the game, whilst the blend of various puzzles, all of which vary in difficulty, keep the things consistently engaging. About the only let down according to the reviewers is regarding the combat. Given that this is an insane asylum, Jigsaw has convinced the inmates that the key to their salvation can literally be found within Tapp’s body and therefore the player finds themselves having to frequently fight off these fanatics. However, the combat side of things is unfortunately a bit sluggish and certainly not only of the game’s strong points. However, Saw: The Videogame does successfully manage to scare, and although it’s not quite a survival horror masterpiece, it’s certainly a worthy addition to the genre.

Grand Theft Auto IV £10.79 @ The Game Collection [XBox 360 Games]

Grand Theft Auto IV £10.79 @ The Game Collection [XBox 360 Games]

The Game Collection seem to have really upped their, um, game recently, with some great deals popping up from them in the last few months. Their price of £11.99 for 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV beats the competition by almost £3 (next best price is £14.71 from Asda Entertainment) and that’s before you knock off an extra quid with a voucher code.

To take the price down to £10.79 just use voucher code: student10%

You take on the role of Niko Bellic, smuggler, human trafficker and  Bosnian war veteran – basically your Average Joe Niceguy. After a botched smuggling job, Niko has to make a speedy exit from Europe and so heads to Liberty City to pursue the American Dream. Needless to say, the American Dream seems to involve a whole lot of violence and illegal activity.

There is no doubt that GTA 4 is a very high quality, excellent game. The graphics were, at the time, pretty much unsurpassed and offer an incredible level of detail. The realism has been ramped up and Liberty City is a huge sandbox for you to explore.

However, I personally found that once I got over the initial wonder at the scope and veneer of Grand Theft Auto IV I was left feeling, dare I say it, a little underwhelmed. The story is good and the characters interesting but very few seem even a little likable. Once you were through with the narrative there is  little in the way of sidequests, so while you have this huge city at your disposal, there is little left to do with it. Most of all I missed the tongue in cheek good nature of the previous outings of the series. It’s a must-play for sure, but in my case at least, a must-play once only.

Wolfenstein £9.99 @ Gamestation [PS3 & Xbox 360 Games]

Wolfenstein £9.99 @ Gamestation [PS3 & Xbox 360 Games]

Gamestation occasionally run an excellent weekend deal, and this one is looking very sweet indeed. This weekend, £9.99 will net you a PS3 or Xbox 360 copy of Wolfenstein: the next gen iteration of Raven’s supernatural shooter franchise. This will save you at least £8 compared to most other retailers (TheHut are currently charging £17.93 for the Xbox 360 version).

On a basic level, Wolfenstein is a solid shooter that fails to break from the middle of the pack thanks to the exceptional quality of its FPS rivals. Technically everything works: you shoot a bunch of Nazis with some cool guns, collect hidden treasures and buy some more cool guns… to shoot more Nazis with. The gunplay mechanics work well; and the weapon upgrade system gives you an incentive to explore the levels and ferret out every hidden secret. The cross-functionality with the XBLA version of the original id classic is also a thoughtful feature that’ll earn you some serious money early in the game.

As a sequel, however, Wolfenstein is truly disappointing. It’s managed to delude itself into believing that it’s a sandbox game- and the lack of direction frequently results in the experience being tedious rather than tightly scripted and atmospheric. The new ‘veil powers’ also feel a bit gimmicky and unnecessary (and frequently makes things far too easy). Come on developers, can’t we have one horror FPS sequel where the hero doesn’t get cheesy superpowers? Here’s looking at you, Monolith.

At the end of the day, Wolfenstein is a capable shooter in its own right and this deal offers exceptional value for money. Unfortunately, there are better shooters out there- but if you’re looking for some mindless FPS fun at a knockdown price then you can’t really go wrong with this one.

From Softcore Porn Denial to More Ubisoft DRM – News Roundup 27th February 2010

DOA Paradise is not Softcore Porn, says Director

From Softcore Porn Denial to More Ubisoft DRM News Roundup 27th February 2010

The Home Office may believe that the upcoming Dead or Alive Paradise is nothing short of dangerous pornography designed to corrupt our rosy-cheeked children, but its product director would beg to differ. In an interview with Eurogamer, Yoshinori Ueda stated:

“We’re certainly not trying to degrade women. They have beautiful bodies. We’re trying to show off the beauty of their bodies but we’re not trying to be degrading about it – we’re trying to show that they are beautiful characters.”

“It’s not that we were trying to make softcore porn, that’s definitely not the goal.”

Wow, well that’s us told. This creepy and slightly worrying well-reasoned and persuasive argument will be sure to sway the overprotective, biased critics that want to remove all violence, sex and good gameplay from our favourite entertainment medium. Good one, Ueda.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about whether or not DOA: Paradise objectifies women or not. So long as it’s a good game, it deserves to be played. If it isn’t, it deserves to be judged on its own merits without petty scapegoating and political point-scoring getting in the way. [via 1UP]

Naughty Dog Moves to Bigger Kennel

From Softcore Porn Denial to More Ubisoft DRM News Roundup 27th February 2010

Naughty Dog, the developer behind the fantastically successful Uncharted series, is moving studios to accommodate for their burgeoning workforce.

“We’ve built out our new studio from a raw and open floorplan to a killer new studio that provides us with more flexibility in space, layout and adjusting to fluctuating staffing needs – not to mention there are some significant upgrades to help us keep developing cutting-edge, award-winning games.”- Naughty Dog Official Blog

To be honest, they’re probably moving to a studio with a bigger mantelpiece- there probably isn’t room for all their AIAS awards!

Future Ubisoft PC titles to contain ‘evil’ DRM

From Softcore Porn Denial to More Ubisoft DRM News Roundup 27th February 2010

As we’ve reported in an earlier bulletin, the PC version of Assassin’s Creed 2 contains a nasty piece of DRM that forces you to maintain a constant connection to the Ubisoft servers. If the connection is interrupted in any way (even for a second) the game quits back to the menu and loses any progress you may have made since the last checkpoint. There’s been a huge gamer backlash against Ubisoft for instigating such a draconian anti-piracy measure, but this hasn’t stopped them from announcing that all the upcoming new PC releases will also use the same system.

Splinter Cell Conviction, Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will all contain this DRM.

“It’s hard for us to say, yes, from now until the day that we all die all of our games are going to include this but most will.” – Ubisoft announcement to PC Gamer.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not a fan of this new DRM at all. But think about this: it’s got to be better than Starforce, right? This style of DRM could be a lot less invasive than spyware and actually provide the way forward for rights management as a whole… if Ubisoft sort out a way of allowing small lapses in internet connection without raping player progress. Batman: Arkham Asylum £8.75 @ Microsoft Games for Windows [PC Games]

Batman: Arkham Asylum £8.75 @ Microsoft Games for Windows [PC Games]

Holy special offer Batman! If you can get past that this deal is via the Microsoft Games for Windows system then you’ll bag yourself a bargain! With a whopping 75% off the full price this makes Batman: Arkham Asylum a mere £8.75, which from our scan of the internet makes it a good £3 less than next closest Game and Gameplay at £11.99, though they will ship you a physical copy.

You’re playing with fire when you try and create anything around a character as beloved as Batman. So it’s lucky that the developers Rocksteady Studios did something of a good job with Batman: Arkham Asylum. It probably helps that the script was created by award-winning Batman writer Paul Dini, so as gamers for a change we don’t have to sit through dialogue that that seems like it’s the rejected lines from this year’s school play.

Setting it in Arkham Asylum was another clever move, as it instantly locks down the location and handily provides a wide selection of classic Batman villains to draw from. The game itself goes with Batman’s strength and introduces a rewarding and clever hand-to-hand combat system with a third-person viewpoint. Rather than just button mashing or repeating complex sequences, it emphasises timing to pull-off blocks and attacks, all done with a cinematic flare and rhythm that makes the combat doubly rewarding.

But the game is more than just about the combat, that’s more the glue that keeps the other segments seamlessly joined. This is a true action-adventure as you get to draw on stealth elements, explore the asylum’s different areas, along with puzzle solving elements, while the story is driven beautifully along with each appearance of the Joker and The Riddler. There’s something for everyone and especially so for Batman fans, as this truly brings alive the Dark Knight.

The Sims 3 £19.95 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

The Sims 3 £19.95 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

If you maybe wound up slipping and falling into a ravine whilst trekking through the Himalayas, whereupon you spent ten years being carefully nurtured back to health by mountain wolves and the odd yeti, you might have missed out on The Sims, Maxis’ take on the God game. This ’strategic real-life simulator’ lets you take command of a 3D walking avatar and puts the smallest details of their life into your hands. You tell them when to eat, sleep, drink, party, work, play and so on and so forth. The Sims essentially combines people watching with almighty puppeteering, and it’s absurdly engrossing.

You can snaffle a copy of the third instalment of the game, which features more of an emphasis on the neighbourhood experience, by heading on over to The Game Collection and buying one for £19.95, saving you around£5 on the nearest competitor over at Amazon.

The Sims 3 comes with a kind of Story Mode now, in which your neighbours will grow and progress through life autonomously alongside you rather than just milling around eternally. The old staples are there, of course; you can still build your dream house, throw parties for celebs, flirt with everyone under the sun, and have blurry pixellated sex with your neighbour’s wife, if you so choose.

The Sims themselves are a little bit different this time around, instead of Wants and Fears, your virtual puppet will now have Wishes, the fulfilling of which will make them incredibly happy and contribute to their Lifetime Happiness score, meaning you can buy rewards. Your Sims will actually go to work now too, rather than just disappearing into the ether for half a day, and there are bundles of new Opportunities, events that’ll boost your Sim’s life with money or skill points.

I learnt the hard way from The Sims 2 that, if you let it, it will suck away your life. There’s something wonderful about taking control of a virtual bright spark and steering them through this colourful representation of life. There’s the transference thing, sure, but there’s so much here to do, and so many different ways to do them. Just make sure you leave time for your actual social life too!

Game Buzz 4: The Sea Of Mediocrity

Game Buzz 4: The Sea Of Mediocrity

I walked into Gamestation today and, as a Wii owner, I thought I’d check to see if there were any games on offer that I might consider buying. Most other platforms have their big hitters powerfully arrayed on maximum display, with the odd little disappointment cowering away at the bottom of a bargain bin, but the Wii is different. I tried to find something worthwhile, I tried to strain my eyes to see past the dazzling screen of crap in front of me but, much like a magic eye picture, it was just a colourful mess that made absolutely no sense forcing me to squint really hard and give myself a migraine.

There is a reason for this: over 80% of the titles released for the Wii have been cynical cash-ins on trends that Nintendo have started themselves, exploited in a short amount of time for no money at all and rushed in and out of production faster than it takes Zero Punctuation’s Yahtzee to have a w*nk. The advent of motion-control has guaranteed two things: a wider audience and developer laziness.

I alluded to this in my guest post for Cubed3 last month, noting that there are immense difficulties for third party developers for the Wii precisely because of the wider audience: how can you anticipate how well you’re game is going to do if you have no real idea of who the hell you’re aiming at? It’s very easy to point out the must-own games on the Wii because (surprise, surprise!) they’re pretty much all Nintendo titles, but then Nintendo’s hallmark has always been creating games that might arguably be considered universal in their appeal. Unfortunately, the third party tactic seems to have been to chuck whatever they had lying around at the Wii and see which ones stuck, or simply attempt to copy Nintendo’s painstaking R&D quality testing and lengthy game production with a quick, cheap rip-off.

With the Wii market saturated with so much shovelware, it’s difficult for genuinely fine games to stand out. Swimming in a sea full of sh*t is difficult: it takes forever to get where your going, and in the end no-one wants to be around you anyway because you’ve emerged tainted, pungent and mucky and all of your hard work has been for nothing because now you’re covered in the stuff and people can’t tell the difference from your awesome self and pile of dung from whence you came.

Click here to find out why Sony and Microsoft should heed the Wii's warning....

Punch-Out!! £14.95 @ Zavvi [Wii Games]

Punch Out!! £14.95 @ Zavvi [Wii Games]

Little Mac is back, and he’s still packing a punch! Sorry…had to. Punch-Out!! is a cartoony boxer with a lot of charm, some memorable characters and, as is so often the case with Nintendo games, a long history. Nearly everybody Little Mac meets on his way to the top will be someone you may have met before if you’re a fan of the series. But we bet you’ve never seen them quite like this!

You can currently pick up a copy of Punch-Out!! for the Wii for just £14.95 from Zavvi at the moment, saving you a good couple of pounds on the nearest in-stock competitor over at Tesco.

Anyone who’s played the boxing section of Wii Sports will know what’s going on here. With Wiimote and Nunchuk in hand, it’s your job to take Little Mac from the lowliest, scummiest garden shed to the glitziest arenas around, battling increasingly colourful characters along the way.

There are a whole host of glorious in-jokes here for long-term Ninty fanboys and the gameplay is both wonderfully simple, you can even play through the game using the classic controller layout too if you fancy more of a trip down memory lane. The cartoonish physicality on display is what makes this game, and whilst it’s an absolute blast as a solitary experience, you’ll really get the most out of it as a party game, be it staging tournaments with your mates or simply handing round the controllers and shouting backseat advice.

There’s plenty of content here, and the power-ups add a surprising amount of depth to a game such as this. It just goes to show that a simple premise such as this doesn’t have to result in one-dimensional mediocrity. Punch-Out!! is an absolute triumph of single-minded brilliance, and should be essential for any budding Wii developer let alone Wii owner.
