After being thoroughly upstaged by Firaxis' strategic masterpiece, 2K Marin's controversial XCOM shooter was put onto the back burner, but apparently it's still cooking away. During their third-quarter financial call, 2K revealed that the project is still in full production and slated to release in the next financial year: i.e. before April 2014.
Originally announced as an atmospheric horror-esque shooter set in the 1950s, and later repurposed into a much more strategic affair, the XCOM reboot was recently rumoured to have shifted focus yet again to become a squad-based third person shooter.
Despite massive fan outcry over the change in direction for the franchise (which may well have helped to accelerate the production of XCOM: Enemy Unknown), we were cautiously impressed with what we saw of 2K Marin's effort at E3 2011. We daresay that more details will be made public over the coming months.
