3DS Breaks Japanese 5 Million Sales Record

Nintendo have announced that the 3DS has broken the 5 million unit sales mark in Japan faster than any other console in history.

The 3DS crossed landmark in just 52 weeks following its release on February 26th, 2011smashing records in the process. Previous record holders had been the console's predecessors - the DS with 56 weeks, and Game Boy Advance with 58 weeks.

Furthermore, the data indicates actual sell-through figures rather than shipped quantities, meaning sales from retailers to customers, provided by Media Create.

The chart above shows in detail how Nintendo's consoles have stacked up against one another over the years, with the 3DS clearly taking some time to get going before a huge surge around week 42, no doubt indebted to a certain extent, to the release of the likes of Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and, of course, Monster Hunter 3G, within short space of one another.
