It's Midweek Madness time again and this week Steam are offering top-down zombie killfest Nation Red for £3.99, saving you 50% on the usual price. If you can rustle up three mates, you can buy the four pack for £11.98 and save yourself around£12 in the process.
You've probably played a dozen games like this, it's basically Shadowgrounds, but with hordes of flesh-eating zombies. There's an 18 level singleplayer campaign, complete with boss battles and a scoring mechanic to keep things competitive, but it's ultimately a repetitive series of increasingly difficult arena battles. There's a massive array of weapons to keep things ticking over but unfortunately there's no progression between levels, very little allusion to any kind of narrative arc and once you've seen one level, you've pretty much seen them all.
That said, bells and whistles are secondary to addictive fun, but unfortunately Nation Red doesn't quite get that right either. There's little incentive to play for anything surpassing 5-10 minutes, which is fine if you've just spent 70p on a game like I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 but a little less impressive for something like this. It's improved with co-op, and the boosted graphics and extra modes might well warrant £4 or so, but ultimately you're better off just buying Shadowgrounds.
