Microsoft Watching US Initiative "With Interest"
After a $99 Xbox 360 bundle supported by a two-year Xbox Live subscription launched in America this May, Xbox Europe are watching its progress with considerable interest. If it proves to be popular, we may end up seeing a similar offering in the UK.
The bundle in question provides an Xbox 360 4GB model and Kinect sensor for $99 - but purchasers are contractually bound by a two-year Xbox Live subscription billed at $14.99 per month. Essentially it's an attempt to implement the mobile phone contract model to home consoles.
"We'll watch it with interest, then we'll decide if it makes sense for us to expand more fully in North America, globally or by region," Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis told VG247. “It’ll be very interesting to see how it works out. We listen to what the consumers are asking for and we experiment with different propositions in different markets."
Microsoft will apparently gauge consumer reaction to the initiative as it rolls out to more stores over the coming months, and potentially extend the distribution to Europe depending on user feedback.
“We just want to be where our consumers want us to be,” Lewis continued. “We want to be able to offer that flexibility of choice, making that kind of proposition available to those that want to consume that way. There are others that may choose to do it differently, and want to go down the more traditional method. I think the key it to have that portfolio of offerings."
“This is just another piece of that portfolio, and it will be interesting to see how folks consume it, what kind of reaction we get, and we’ll tweak and enhance it based on what we hear.”
Would you consider buying into this sort of pricing structure, dear reader?
