What Is Beachhead?
Activision's Q1 Investor's call revealed that their policy of focusing on core IPs is paying off (literally), at least in the short term. However, we're more interested in the juicy announcements rather than the dry numbers - and we haven't been disappointed. Activision executive Eric Hirshberg has officially confirmed rumours that the next Call Of Duty title is set for an imminent reveal, and that it will contain an "unprecendented online universe." Full details below.
Speaking to shareholders during their first quarter investors call, Hirshberg claims that the new Call Of Duty title will "set a new standard" for the series and "reset the bar" for the genre.
The creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making, and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it, will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and, of course, epic action.
He continued to state that a full reveal is due "in the coming weeks," tying in nicely with Craig Fairbrass' (Ghost's voice actor) comments made last week.
Hirshberg also dropped some more hints about Beachhead, the mysterious new studio announced this time last year. We already know that they're working on something that will tie the disconnected Call Of Duty online universes together - and now we've got a little more to go on.
On our last call, I told you that we had formed a wholly-owned development studio called Beachhead to lead the creation of an all new connected digital universe to the Call of Duty franchise.
This platform will include a suite of services and content plan that will unite and ignite the community like never before. The platform will support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time.
It's been in development for almost two years and we're very excited about the increased value and excitement we can bring to our community through this platform.
Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen. Are Beachhead working on a downloadable stats and community portal a la Halo Waypoint? A new community website? Or just some more DLC? All we know is that CEO Bobby Kotick promised that "a lot of new capabilities and services [are] provided free of charge"... meaning that plenty of its services will be monetized in some way.
Current rumours suggest that the next Call Of Duty title is codenamed Collossus and scheduled for a November 8th reveal... but since Battlefield 3 is set for the same day, I'm not sure if I necessarily believe them. We'll keep our eyes on the situation.
