Age of Conan Goes Free to Play

The world's "sexiest and most savage MMO" will be getting a re-release this summer, and will be made free to play, with premium users gaining access to extra content according to this morning's Funcom press release.  It wall also be renamed 'Age of Conan: Unrated' which, the team say, will allow them "to stay even more true to the original works of Conan author Robert E. Howard."  More blades, more blood, and more breasts then...

In preparation for the re-release, Funcom say they are hard at work on new locations and monsters, and will be scribing brand new storylines to tie them all together.  All will be included in Conan: Unrated.  The recently announced movie tie-in pack, that will "introduce content and characters from the upcoming ‘Conan the Barbarian’ movie", will also feature.

Creative Director Craig Morrison spoke openly about his enthusiasm for the new free-to-play model:

"Everyone on the team is excited about opening up our world to an even larger audience.  The online world of Hyboria is constantly expanding as we continue to introduce new gameplay features and new content, and we truly believe that ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ will offer something truly new and unique to both new players and to those have already experienced the brutal online world of Conan the Barbarian."

According to Funcom, the 'f2p' gaming space is becoming "rapidly more popular, and more profitable."  Either way, it's good news for gamers, who will now be able to enjoy the loinclothed shenanigans of everyone's favourite barbarian, absolutely free.

We'll be on hand to give a set release date as soon as it is announced.
