The three offline campaigns for the Marine, Alien and Predator will train you up nicely for the online action. Each campaign only lasts a fistful of hours but is entertaining and different enough from each other to keep the experience fresh.
Online is where the real fun begins though with a decent number of modes involving team and free for all matches. Teams can be mixed or you can have a species face-off.
While playing as the Marine is familiar territory to shooter fans, the other two will take a bit of getting used too. The Alien is a skittish mad bastard that can run on walls and ceilings too while the first-person camera lurches at a sickening rate. The pure speed these suckers move at though is awesome. Hearing someone over their headset panicking when you dash across the path in front of them out of nowhere is brilliantly evil.
The Predators have their classic camouflage to lurk in the shadows and treetops, with stealth kills being their most frequent method of collecting skulls. They also feature in the game’s strongest mode, Predator Hunt. A team of Marines have to kill one Predator, with the successful Marine then turning into the Predator for a turn. Whoever racks up the most kills as a Predator wins. Play this in the jungle levels and you’re right there in the first Predator movie. Stalking your prey and using your heat vision to rip apart marines is almost as much fun as finding the hallowed plasma-caster and using it to turn those red blurs in your vision into two red blurs.
Essential for fans of the (early) movies, comics, books or excellent multiplayer in general. You can read our full review of the game here.
