That's Triple 2010's Haul
While I'm not at all surprised by Angry Bird's success - its deceptively addictive and elegant in its simplicity - I am sort of surprised by this particular bit of news. According to The Wall Street Journal, over 6.5 million users downloaded Angry Birds on Christmas Day, tripling last year's haul. Of course, it's Christmas, and capital is duly shared across families on the most festive day of the year.
But who the hell hasn't played Angry Birds yet? An ignorant statement, yes, but the sheer pace at which Angry Birds and mobile gaming in particular expands is phenomenal. Becoming something of a cultural convention now, mega-rich publisher Rovio has an Angry Birds film in the works, a slew of plush toys and even obscure advertizing partnerships - luxury pistachio nuts; really? Can they lead the charge for mobile gaming to become the dominant platform on the market? Only time will tell. [The Wall Street Journal]
