Assassin's Creed Unity: Ubisoft suggests frame rate workaround

JonLester |  Nov. 14, 2014 at 16:41

If you bought Assassin's Creed Unity and are experiencing frame rate issues, Ubisoft has issued a potential workaround...

...playing the game offline. Which could "potentially improve frame rate."

On the other hand, Digital Foundry reckons that this is a load of old cobblers.

"We've now tested single-player with the console online and offline, and report no game-changing difference to the overall experience. In some cases, running offline is faster, while in others performance is the same or lower. If there is any improvement, it's very, very small and we're inclined to think this is just down to the variation in engine load between the two sessions. Certainly, there's little evidence to suggest that running offline brings us appreciably closer to the target 30fps."

Whoops. Anyway, there you have it. Matt is still working on our review - though you can read up on our latest coverage here: http://www.dealspwn.com/search?search=assassin%27s+creed+unity

Just stop it, Ubisoft. Just stop lying, nut up, apologise for being idiots, and promise to fix the mess you've made.

They're on a roll, aren't they.

Come on, Ubi. You've been my favourite gaming publisher for the last couple of years, but you're really screwing things up lately!

Time was, I would've happily pre-ordered almost anything they made. Those days have passed, thanks to The Crew and early reviews of AC, not to mention their recent isolationist attitudes re Steam etc.

Fingers crossed for Far Cry...

My copy for the X1 arrived today and I have installed it.

I'm really in two minds about playing it this evening as oppose to waiting for a week or two (plenty to get on with Halo and GTA when it comes out) for Ubi to patch it up.

Is it really game breakingly bad or should I just crack on and deal with it?

I am loving it bud! It is definitely a nod back to the earlier games. Much less of a chore feeling than the last two!

Only couple of hours in and not seen any bugs or glitching

My first couple of hours on this have been a damn sight more enjoyable that 3 or 4.

@JoeDark64: My advice would be to go for it! Xbox One is widely reported as the most stable platform, plus it's a new game, why not see if it works?

Also, there's a new update - here are the patch notes.

PS4:
Fixed an issue where under some circumstances, Arno can fall through ground when free running on various props or when dropping down on to an NPC.
Fixed an issue where it is possible for Arno to get stuck in a hay cart next to the Pantheon in the Bièvre district.
Fixed an issue that may cause a game crash when joining the co-op session of another player who has a specific single player and side missions progression.

Note that even with this patch, players may still experience:
Most framerate issues that have been reported since the release of the game
Performance issues

PC:
Fixed an issue where under some circumstances, Arno can fall through ground when free running on various props or when dropping down on to an NPC.
Fixed an issue where it is possible for Arno to get stuck in a hay cart next to the Pantheon in the Bièvre district.
Fixed an issue that may cause a game crash when joining the co-op session of another player who has a specific single player and side missions progression.
Improved performance in cinematic on low HW configurations
Fixed various flickering issues on nVidia SLI and AMD CrossFire configurations
Fixed various Graphic issues
Fixed light artifacts in PCSS shadows
Fixed problem with refresh rate on a first game launch.
Fixed various Input issues
Other keyboard/mouse fixes in several menu pages.
Fixed issues with “Invite to game” option when it was becoming unavailable after host migration, when it was active for all recent players instead of only for friends
Fixed issues with Helix Credits

Note that even with this patch, players may still experience
Most framerate issues that have been reported since the release of the game
Performance issues

Yeah I decided to fire it up, been looking forward to it since I visited Paris about 3 months ago (first time I have purchased a game solely off a weekend away)!

About two hours in and, apart from cut scenes being about 20-25 fps, the game itself has been spot on so far. The scale of the cities and graphics are beautiful. Not played an AC game properly since number 2 but I keep annoying the GF by climbing high and then nudging her saying 'look at how good this looks!'

Scuttling up Notre Dame at the moment, awesome!

It's a perfect example of how devs take the **** these days. They must have known it was full of bugs, even after whatever the obligatory day one patch fixed. There was a time they had to get it perfect right out the door. There was no patching things up later.

Ubisoft has issued another potential fix:

"We have discovered one of the issues that may cause the game to crash at the main menu after pressing the CONTINUE button. This issue affects all platforms.

The team is working hard on a fix for those players that have been affected by this. However, for players who haven’t experienced this issue, we highly recommend you take the following steps to prevent a crash:

Do not add any IN-GAME RECENT PLAYER as a GAME CONTACT
If you already have GAME CONTACTS, perform the following to remove them:
My Brotherhood > My Contacts > Game Contacts (using RB/R1) > Focus on a Contact (LS) > More Actions (Y/Triangle) > Remove from contacts."

So... remove your game contacts?

I found a great fix. I stopped playing Unity and uninstalled it from my PS4. I'm much happier now.
