The new Astro Boy movie may have been a blink-and-you'll-miss-it addition to our cinema screens but that is far from enough to exempt it from its inevitable video game tie in fate.
Undercutting the already very cheap £14.99 deal from Tesco Entertainment by more than a fiver (since their price excludes p&p), this is a real bargain; shop anywhere else and you are looking to pay at least double The Game Collection's price. It's just a shame that it's really not very good.
The Game Collection are currently only showing 39 in stock so you'll have to snap it up quickly!
The game follows the same plot as the film, with players taking on the role of Astro Boy as he embarks upon an allegedly "epic" adventure to save Metro City from the dastardly President Stone and his robotic minions.
At first the inclusion of clips from the film to tell the tale seem like a pretty neat touch but it turns out that they are all silent, with a voice-over provided to take the place of the dialogue. This is a very bizarre choice by developers and sucks the life straight out of the narrative.
The flying scenes are a lot of fun and look pretty nice but sadly these are few and far between, a refreshing drop of pure water in a dead sea. The majority of the game is a very uninspired and bland brawler which cannot even be saved by the novelty of a protagonist who can fire missiles from his butt-cheeks. The visuals are similarly unimpressive for the majority of the game, situated in lazy level design that never excites.
If you were already looking to buy Astro Boy then this is a fantastic deal but the great price should in no way entice you to indulge in this exercise in mediocrity if you did not already have your heart set on it.
