Ad-Free In Internet Explorer

Several classic Atari games will be given a new free-to-play lease of life thanks to Atari Arcade, the venerable publisher announced today. This new service will allow players to compete for high scores in new versions of games like Asteroids, Pong, Lunar Lander, Missile Command and Centipede via their web browser. Due to a partnership with Microsoft, Atari Arcade will run without adverts in Internet Explorer - both on PCs, Surface tablets and Windows Phones. Otherwise, enjoy some product placement.

So... anyone excited? To be honest, we'll probably be playing Hitman: Blood Money...

I don't get it...
Where do they make the money? Why would they make something and give it away for free?
Is it just to get people using IE, thereby making IE more valuable?

I think it's a Microsoft venture designed to try and coax people back to IE. It's embarrassing that a program shipped with every Windows PC in the world needs to try and convince people to use it, but them's the breaks. Also, since Atari Arcade looks to be compatible with the Surface, it could well be a small but interesting string in the tablet's bow.

Plus, Atari can remind people that they exist.

Yep, advertising will pay the way.

Just look at Google, they just develop stuff for fun because they can. Maybe that mentality is spreading.

Atari remaking the same old games? Perish the thought.:|

Is this an early September Fools Day joke? A flashy dubstep trailer for Pong/Breakout/Asteroids?

Major new breakthrough in browser technology, you can play 30 year old games..... for FREE! Only with IE.

Try something like http://kickassapp.com/ for gaming re-imagined.
