All New Nexuiz Screens Fly In

Vistas Galore

THQ's recently announced, CryEngine 3-powered title, Nexuiz, is set for release later this year, as AlienTrap Software tend to the arena shooters' particular development needs. We're actually quite excited for the XBLA/PSN shooter, which promises to blend the high-octane chaos of Unreal and Quake with Crytek's sumptuous tech. THQ have dropped a handful of new screenshots online for us to peruse, so why not take a look?

Mass Effect 3 Demo Dropping On Valentine's Day

And They Say Romance Is Dead

Having already announced a cross-game partnership between Big Huge Games' Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur where exclusive armor and weaponry can be earned in either title via their respective demos, Bioware have now finally lifted the lid on when said Mass Effect 3 demo will be available. But you might want to cancel that romantic boat ride, as it's set to release on February the 14th. That's right; Valentine's Day.

Mortal Kombat PS Vita Launching In The Spring

Bid Your Vita-lity Farewell

The PS Vita launched in Japan last December, where it endured a rocky introduction to the market, outsold by its portable rival, the Nintendo 3DS, and failing to hit the figures Sony had hoped for. However, I don't doubt the Vita will soon find its feet, especially when it has a grip in North America and Europe, where it releases very soon. And expect to be ripping arms, legs and heads off on it in the Spring, when NetherRealm releases their still-in-development Mortal Kombat title on the Vita.

Modern Warfare 3 Deploys Map Pack Screenshots

Liberation & Piazza The First Of Many

Last week, Activision announced that premium subscribers to its Call of Duty Elite service would be rewarded with no less than twenty maps over the next nine months. Their mantra? To provide "more new content, more often, and with more variety than ever". Snappy. Well, we've nine new screenshots from the first two maps set to be released, Liberation and Piazza, which appear to offer a distinctly European backdrop to all the bullet-riddled carnage set to unfold.

Namco Considering Dark Souls On PC?

Online Petition Grabs Their Attention

Dark Souls launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October of last year, and has been ruining the mental state of its unwitting customers ever since. From Software's punishingly difficult dungeon crawler is a work of art; if you're idea of art is tearing your own hair out by the handful and erecting a shrine from the shattered remains of broken controllers. PC fans, obviously of a sadomasochistic slant, have been clamoring for a Windows port for months now, and it appears an online petition with over 65, 000 signatures might have gotten their attention...

Former Bodycount Dev Reveals "Unlawful" Treatment

Codemasters Claim They're Remedying The Situation

You remember Bodycount, right? Once headed up by Burnout and Black director, Stuart Black, the exciting shooter crumbled under the weight of his departure and an overall hierarchical meltdown within Codemasters. So dire was the financial situation that a certain former Bodycount programmer, Semi Essessi, reveals Codemasters owed him almost 400 hours of overtime pay, and then threatened him with bankruptcy proceedings when the funds were "mistakenly" paid to him. Codemasters, however, claims they're in talks with Essessi in hopes of remedying the situation.

Microsoft Puts Web TV Subscription Work On Hold

Scared Off By Licensing Costs?

Last week, rumours emerged that Microsoft was planning a DVR-esque device to be integrated in to future Xbox consoles. Work on the project had split off from previous work inside Microsoft on a patented set-top box where the company could deliver television and films to customers. Well, it appears they instead turned their attention to an online model not dissimilar to Netflix, until Microsoft was presented with the licensing costs for such an endeavor, which appears to have put a spanner in the works.

Mass Effect 3's Citadel Is "Bigger Than Ever"

Which Is Presumably Quite Big

What with Bioware vaunting Mass Effect 3's much-improved gunplay and combat scenarios at almost all preview and press events, you'd be forgiven for thinking the studio had abandoned the core RPG principle of exploration. Mass Effect is a space-opera, after all; what's more exciting than exploring a vast universe, festooned with uncharted planets, abandoned stations and long lost relics? Well, it appears the galaxy's communal retreat, the Citadel, has been beefed-up for ME3, suggesting Bioware hasn't quite abandoned its principles yet!

The Darkness 2 Demo Due Next Week

On Xbox LIVE, PSN And Steam

Despite some initial reservations, we're quickly warming to The Darkness 2, what with its quad-wielding chaos and wonderfully original art style. We're a little sad to see Starbreeze jump ship - although at least it was for this - but Digital Extremes appear to have truly tapped in to what makes Jackie Estacado and his demonic passenger work, and the results speak for themselves.

Set for release later this year, publisher 2K Games has announced a demo for The Darkness 2 is due by the middle of next week. It launches first on Xbox LIVE on Tuesday the 17th for Gold subscribers, before Silver members, American PSN users and Steam subscribers can download it the next week, on Tuesday the 24th. Finally, PSN users in Europe and Asia/Pacific can get their hands on it the following day, Wednesday the 25th. Expect our verdict on the demo very soon. [2K Games]

Ninja Gaiden 3

With A Bloody New Video

I've all but lost hope in the Ninja Gaiden series. Once my go-to hack and slasher of choice, the loss of the controversial but undoubtedly talented Tomonobu Itagaki was difficult to stomach, and the paring back on the gore for the upcoming third entry was unforgivable. I even gave it a go over in GamesCom back in August, and found the entire experience utterly uninspired and disappointingly linear. But I digress, Tecmo Koei has unleashed an all new trailer for Ninja Gaiden 3, showcasing the competitive multiplayer mode in action. Which, I must admit, looks interesting, and at the very least ambitious.

AC Revelations Director Exits Ubisosft

Leaves For Marketing Firm

Assassin's Creed: Revelations wasn't quite as successful as Ubisoft had hoped, I imagine, effectively ending their idea of an annualized AC model - I hope. It had some interesting ideas, and switching to Constantinople was yet again an inspired location change, but overall the formula had become generic and tired, and the series is in dire need of a revolution instead of revelations. Geddit? Ahem, well, it appears as if creative director Alexandre Amancio has had enough with overdressing assassins, too, as he's left Ubisoft to join a marketing firm.

"Video games and advertising have many common elements," Amancio told Game Informer, about to take on his new role of chief creative officer at Cossette, a Canadian marketing company. "In addition, like advertising, the video game industry must now take into account and supply a very important social dimension in its development and strategies. The game is no longer just a game, it's a community, relations between players, and the brand." Ubisoft have yet to comment on the matter, although reports of sniffling and the occasional emotional hiccup have been reported from their HQ. [Game Informer]

RUMOUR: GAME Lets Slip New EA Titles

New Medal of Honor, Need For Speed 13

Has UK retail chain GAME revealed a new Medal of Honor and the thirteenth Need for Speed game ahead of schedule? It would appear so, if a now removed Tweet is to be believed. Having visited a confidential EA presentation, presumably to key retailers in on the publisher's upcoming plans, GAME's excitable social media chiefs let slip the two new games and promised an "exciting year ahead" for the company.

"EA presentation was great," they Tweeted, although said Tweet was swiftly removed and buried in a landfill somewhere. "Had mentions of a new Medal of Honour [sic] and Need for Speed 13! EA have an exciting year ahead." It seems as if EA got wind of the leak and forced GAME to remove the Tweet, although they did attend an EA presentation, as evidenced by this Tweet earlier in the day. We've long expected a new Medal of Honor game, and Need for Speed is an annual franchise for EA, so no surprises there. [Twitter]

Sony's Ideal Future Playstation Tech Is "Five Years Away"

Looking For As Close To "Perfect Technologies" As Possible

For the last few weeks, the internet has been abuzz with chatter that an announcement from both Sony and Microsoft regarding the next-generation successor to their current home consoles is imminent at this year's E3 showcase event. It's all up in the air until the event itself, of course, but we've had a few niggling doubts ourselves, especially in regards to Sony, who've been very vocal in their admission that the PS3 is a ten year console. And in an interview with E&T, Maasaki Tsuruta, CTO of Sony's Computer Entertainment division, admitted their goals for future Playstation tech were still "five years away".

PS3 Is Hitman Absolution's Lead Platform

"The PS3 Is A Difficult Beast"

I'm glad we've finally crested the difficult waters Sony's Playstation 3 first encountered on the market, when developers struggled to conform to the Cell's unique architecture. The PS3 version of a multiplatform release was often to be avoided at all costs, but now we've finally reached a relative visual parity - it's a different story when it comes to first-party software, where the PS3 reigns supreme. Yet another studio has now opted to make Sony's platform their development lead, with IO Interactive plumping for it on Hitman Absolution.

HMV Scaling Back On Games?

Disappointing Christmas Return To Blame

After an 8.2% drop in sales during the five-week Christmas period compared to last year, UK retail chain HMV is looking in to a possible scaling back in their videogame sales department in an effort to rescue the company's slipping profits. The popular retailer revealed the drop in sales was not reflected across their market share in CDs or DVDs, as the share in the videogames market fell 16% across the UK.

Asura's Wrath Demo On LIVE, PSN

"Unleash Your Rage In Two Epic Boss Battles!"

Asura's Wrath hits shelves in Japan today, while the rest of the world must wait little over a month for Capcom's rage-soaked action-adventure title from .hack// and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja studio, CyberConnect2. If you're a little jealous that our Japanese cousins can enjoy what Capcom describe as an "interactive cliffhanger-action game", then rest easy, as they've released a demo on Xbox LIVE and PSN to sate our appetites; for now.

The Asura's Wrath demo is free for Gold subscribers and all PSN users, clocking in at just over half a gigabyte. And in suitably bombastic style, the demo isn't an introduction to the story of a combat appetizer, but a two-course sampling of not one, but two "epic boss battles". You'll face off against the planet-sized Wyzen, then come face to face with the sword-master, Augus. On the Moon's surface, naturally. Check it out, and tell us what you think. Asura's Wrath is due in Europe next month. [Xbox LIVE]

id Software Layoffs Confirmed By Bethesda

"Work On Future id Titles Continues Unabated"

We all feared the worst when RAGE's initial sales figures were reported, with the id Software shooter under-performing for new bosses, Bethesda Softworks. The entire industry is on a razor's edge right now, some companies teetering on the brink, others edging ever closer to salvation as an inevitable shift in the gaming landscape looms. And it appears that, while id Software will continue to operate, Bethesda has been forced to cut an unspecified number of staff from their RAGE team.

"As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," a Bethesda statement reads. The official announcement was preempted by a poster on Neogaf who got wind of the layoffs. However, Bethesda has confirmed "work on future id titles continues unabated", with Doom 4 rumored to be next on the cards at the historical studio. [Joystiq]

Mass Effect 3 DLC May Influence A Fourth Game

Shepard's Story Won't Be The End

We're but two months away from Mass Effect 3, where Bioware will bring their sprawling, often brilliant space-opera to a - hopefully - triumphant end. While I have concerns regarding the focus on action over adventure and the ever-dwindling RPG elements, I still have faith in Bioware to deliver. And even if Shepard does meet his end in his climactic clash with the Reapers, it appears as if Bioware is already thinking about a fourth game, and your reaction to ME3 and its DLC may influence their decision.

PS3 Skyrim Lag Targeted By Patch 1.4

Fourth Time Lucky?

Having penned quite a few articles now since Skyrim's release in November of last year regarding the slew of technical issues players continue to encounter, I count my blessings that my forty odd hours or so spent wandering the Nord's native land the worst glitch I encountered was the occasional crash and a backwards-flying dragon. Which, I must say, was sort of amazing to witness. Bethesda has promised, however, that the lag PS3 players have been reporting in ever-increasing numbers will be addressed by the upcoming 1.4 patch.

They broke the news on Twitter, which revealed patch 1.4 is set for release this month, so expect it within the next two weeks or so. Speaking on their official website, Bethesda revealed they've been "reaching out" to collect as much data as possible on Skyrim's glitch-riddled issues, and revealed that they've isolated a few perpetrators, namely auto-saving in the background - which can be deactivated - redundant AI cycles and the "dynamic system memory allocation". We hope to have some better news to report soon. [Bethesda]
