Super Mario Galaxy 2 Preorder £29.99 @ Gameplay [Nintendo Wii Games]

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Preorder £29.99 @ Gameplay [Nintendo Wii Games]

Although it’s not released for another three months, certain people out there are beginning to get far too excited about the imminent arrival of the sure to be incredible new Mario Galaxy game.

Gameplay are currently offering the only sub-£30 preorder price for Mario’s second romp through the galaxy: a very reasonable £29.99 which, thanks to their free postage policy, is £2 shy of their nearest competitor Gameseek.

Few games have given me as much joy in the past ten years as Mario’s bright and beautiful intergalactic adventure. E3 2009 gave us some amazing teasing glimpses of Mario’s new forays into outer space and every bit of footage eked out since has made me more and more ludicrously impatient to get my hands on the game.

In many ways the second instalment offers more of the same: 3D platforming action on a plethora of planets, often varying wildly in size and landscape. However, when a game is as great as the original Mario Galaxy, “more of the same” is a very tantalising prospect. That said, there are plenty of new features to stir the action up a little, the best publicised of these being the inclusion of Mario’s dino pal Yoshi who appears in a number of levels, doing his usual Yoshi thang as well as a few new tricks such as inflating like a balloon, using his tongue as a zip wire across pits and eating different fruits to gain power ups. The bee suit from the first game makes a comeback but there are also plenty of new items and gameplay mechanics to discover, such as a planet drill and switches which affect the flow of time.

There is no doubt in my mind that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be another near perfect piece of platforming  genius and June just can’t come soon enough!

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis £7.99 @ Game or Gamestation [PC Games]

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis £7.99 @ Game or Gamestation [PC Games]

Both Game and Gamestation are currently selling Divinity II for just £7.99, giving a ridiculous £15.50 saving compared to the next best price from a retailer with stock available: £23.49 from CD Wow.

Like the previous two Divinity titles, Ego Draconis takes place in the magical realm of Rivellon, home to a young dragon slayer and the game’s protagonist. While still in the initiation stages of your career you meet a much despised dragon knight, on her last legs. In her last moments she transfers her powers to you, meaning that you are now an accursed dragon knight yourself, oh the horror! Soon you come to realise that all that you once knew was a lie and that the dragon knights are not the true enemy.

Watching some preview videos on Youtube had me rather excited for this game—it had something of a Dragon Age meets Fable look to it with the added joy of being able to transform into a dragon. So I was disappointed when it was released to a very lukewarm critical reception. User scores are generally a little higher however and it does have enough going for it to make it worth a punt at under a tenner.

The human-to-dragon mechanic is one of its main saving graces, flapping around as a scaly winged beast is a lot of fun and adds a bit of interest that you don’t find elsewhere. The graphics are not especially beautiful but certainly serviceable and some areas are deftly designed. There’s lots of weapons and armour to fiddle around with if you like that sort of thing and the voice acting is decent. It’s a shame that the decent premise gives way to a fairly bland story peopled with bland characters and that the challenge level feels off balance at times but at least there’s nothing truly terrible here.

Dragon Age: Origins £19.99 @ Gamestation [XBox 360 & PS3 Games]

Dragon Age: Origins £19.99 @ Gamestation [XBox 360 & PS3 Games]

It may not last too long but Gamestation are currently selling Dragon Age: Origins for just £19.99. This is the cheapest I have ever seen the XBox version and it is very rare to see PS3 copies for under £20 either. At the moment the next best competitor for either console is Zavvi with a price tag of £24.85 (XBox PS3) so Gamestation’s price gives a near £5 saving.

Dragon Age takes some very well worn high fantasy tropes—elves, dwarves, mages, themes of betrayal and impending apocalyptic doom— and places them into a huge world that is a pleasure to explore and filled with side quests to undertake and fascinating characters to meet.

While it may feel rather familiar to anyone who has read any fantasy literature, the story is perfectly paced and just so beautifully told that it will keep you hooked from start to finish as well as being populated by brilliant characters with excellent voice acting to make up for the occasionally dodgy models. Add to this the brilliantly implemented morality system that has far deeper consequences than is usually seen to games, a fun and varied combat system and a world that is made real through it’s rich history and lore and it is not hard to see why, while Dragon Age has not been the biggest commercial success of recent times, it has won an army of devoted fans.

If you are a graphics freak then it is highly recommended that you opt for the PC version of the game, as it fares far well visually than either of the consoles. The PS3 offering is the less ugly sister, with improved textures over the 360 but unfortunately it is also the more glitch prone of the two.

The graphics issue is a shame but really doesn’t not affect the greatness of this game—big, bold and brilliant, it is a worthy addition to any games shelf.

If you want to know more before taking the plunge then be sure to read Matt’s review!

God of War III Preorder £33.99 @ The Game Collection [PS3 Games]

God of War III Preorder £33.99 @ The Game Collection [PS3 Games]

It’s not long now until God of War fans can get their hands on the final instalment in Kratos’ epic revenge trilogy. For those who absolutely have to have it the day it arrives, The Game Collection currently have the best preorder price, at just £33.99, it’s £4 down from the next best offer of £36.95 from Blah DVD (and affliates).

GoW III picks up where the previous instalment ended, with Kratos on the massive Gaia’s back, hungry for his revenge and glory. The game sees Kratos journey from the giddy heights of Mount Olympus to the depths of Hades in his quest to avenge the wrongs committed against him.

All the previews, video reviews and demos suggest that this will be an unmissable game for Playstation owners delivering an epic experience in a world with a ridiculous sense of scale. Fans of gore will relish the opportunity to rip out cyclops’ eyes and stab minotaurs to death with their own horns. While it has sacrificed some of the diversity seen in God of War II, the fantastic combat and incredible, benchmark setting visuals are present. Reviews suggest that the story is a tad slow to start but once it gets going it provides an excellent and very satisfying resolution to Kratos’ tale.

F.E.A.R. 2 Special Edition £9.99 @ Game [PC Games]

F.E.A.R. 2 Special Edition £9.99 @ Game [PC Games]

If you are simply interested in Project Origin alone then you might wish to visit Play or HMV, who have both dropped their prices to beat Shop To’s deal that Marius posted yesterday, and are now selling it for  just £7.99. However Game’s exclusive special edition contains both the sequel and the original game. If you’re looking to get both this is a great deal because the best price for the original F.E.A.R. is £9.99 alone from Game Seek. So if you buy from Game you can get both games for the normal price for one.

As well as including the original F.E.A.R. title, Game’s exclusive collector’s edition comes in the steelbook packaging that lots of people seem to go crazy for and offers exclusive skins.

The original F.E.A.R. was an exciting and clever thrill ride through a blend of horror and first person shooter gameplay that attracted a body of fans eagerly anticipating the next instalment. As is often the case, the sequel did not quite live up to the high expectations but that is not to say that it is not worthwhile. Project Origin may not quite reach the standard of its predecessor but it is still a very enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

While there are some good, creepy scenes, the game just isn’t that scary and the storyline just feels a little to predictable to build up any real tension. Nonetheless as a shooter this feels solid and the slow-mo shoot outs are a lot of fun, particularly if you are a fan of gore. With the fantastic original included, F.E.A.R. 2 is well worth a go at this price.

White Knight Chronicles £27.99 @ The Game Collection [PS3 Games]

White Knight Chronicles £27.99 @ The Game Collection [PS3 Games]

Level 5’s first project for the PS3 is unfortunately this terribly mediocre fantasy rpg. It’s not the worst game ever but it’s certainly a huge let down.

If the poor reviews have not been enough to put you off then you may be interested to hear that The Game Collection are currently selling White Knight Chronicles for just £27.99; this is a good £6 cheaper than the next best price of £34 from Amazon.

In the kingdom of Balandor, a princess’s traditional coming of age feast is rudely interrupted by evil organisation The Magi. The princess manages to escape with the aid of a plucky young chap called Leonard who is magically and conveniently transformed into ancient warrior the White Knight, who has the power to defeat The Magi, when he stumbles into a suit of armour. Thus begins a predictable and highly disappointing adventure.

There are some great enemies to pit yourself against but unfortunately the combat system that you will be using to fight them is thoroughly unexciting and battle is often far too easy. There are some nice environments but the character models aren’t great and, while the voice acting very good, the lip syncing that accompanies it is often dreadful. The story is a reasonable length, offering a good thirty hours of play and there’s a whole heap of side quests to kill plenty more time. The multiplayer mode isn’t perfect but it’s nice to have the option to tackle a good selection of the quests with some chums.

Overall it’s not a dreadful game but it shoots way below what was expected—a sad, missed opportunity.

Metro 2033 + Red Faction: Guerrilla + 1GB Memory Stick £25.85 @ Shop To [PC Games]

Metro 2033 + Red Faction: Guerrilla + 1GB Memory Stick £25.85 @ Shop To [PC Games]

Shop To are offering a very interesting deal for pre order of the PC version of Metro 2033—for £25.85 you get the game plus a copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla and a 1GB memory stick. If you don’t already own RF: Guerrilla (and would like to give it a try) then this is a great little deal, as if you were to buy all three items separately at their cheapest online prices you would expect to pay at least £30. If however you are not interested in the Red Faction game, then you are probably better off heading to Cool Shop for your preorder of Metro 2033 as they are selling it for a sweet £21.49.

Metro 2033 is an interesting mixed bag: a first person shooter with survival horror and RPG elements, based on the novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. In post apocalyptic Moscow, the only safe haven is the sprawling metro system which has become host to a series of makeshift towns and homesteads, while the outside world has been rendered a scorched and hostile wasteland.

Previews suggest that Metro 2033 will be dark and atmospheric, set in a world that is a marvel to explore, populated with interesting characters who converse in well scripted dialogue.  The nearly HUD-less presentation makes for an extra realistic experience and, alongside the makeshift weaponry and bullets-as-currency device, should make for an interesting and challenging game.  So far, it all sounds so good and I am tentatively excited about this title.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story £17.93 @ The Hut [DS Games]

Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story £17.93 @ The Hut [DS Games]

The latest instalment in Mario and Luigi’s wacky adventures in role playing game territory was released last year to rapturous reception and is probably my very favourite game of 2010.

Today’s Nintendo sale at The Hut is throwing up a couple of bargains and this one in particular caught my eye as, not only is Bowser’s Inside Story freakin’ awesome but also the next best price for it is £23.95 from Asda Entertainment so, if you hop to it then you stand to make a £6 saving.

In Bowser’s Inside Story, Mario and Luigi at last come to understand how it feels to walk a mile in the King of the Koopa’s shoes, or at least his stomach, as they find themselves shrunk and sucked up into his cavernous belly. The action is split into these sections where you play as the brothers, working together to progress through Bowser’s insides and sections where you play as the great villain himself.

There is so much to love here, from the intelligent and often laugh-out-loud script, great variety in gameplay, fun moves and combos to learn, creative puzzles and fantastically entertaining new characters, to the cheerful and vibrant visuals. The Mario & Luigi RPG series has always been a riot and this latest instalment is almost certainly the best of the brilliant bunch. I adore Bowser’s Inside Story and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Earlier I posted a deal about The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks—it’s games like these two that remind me why I bought a DS in the first place (it’s easy to forget as you drown in titles about babysitting and trip over mini-game collections).

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks £17.93 @ The Hut [Nintendo DS Games]

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks £17.93 @ The Hut [Nintendo DS Games]

With Spirit Tracks, Nintendo have produced yet another great Zelda adventure, in which Link gets bored of messing about on boats and takes to the land with his exotic new steam powered transport.

It’s one of The Hut’s Daily Deals so you can pick it up for just £17.93 if you buy today, this is over £6 cheaper than the next best deal for the game (£24.65 from Zavvi) so a bargain well worth grabbing while you can.

Link’s latest adventure continues the same narrative of Gamecube title Wind Waker and its DS sequel The Phantom Hourglass. 100 years after the events of Hourglass, a young Link is working towards a quiet career as a train engineer but on the night of the ceremony to officially recognise him as such, Zelda implores him to take her to the Tower of Spirits. It soon falls to Link and the Princess to uncover the mystery of the Spirit Tracks that is troubling Hyrules railways.

If you have played The Phantom Hourglass, then you’ll fall straight into the swing of this little adventure with ease. The game has the same cheerful and cartoony cel shaded graphics as the previous DS instalment and feels almost identical to play, with total stylus control and a train taking the place of the little boat to zip around the world map with.

There’s the usual adventuring and dungeon exploring Zelda fans have become very well acquainted with and even phantoms as seen in Hourglass. However this time around the hulking sets of armour are under your control, an interesting new mechanic that invigorates the formula at least a little and is plenty of fun to do.

Zelda games can be relied on for quality so it comes as no surprise that there is really very little to complain about here. As usual, the story is nicely paced, very enjoyable and packed with side quests to keep you busy along the way. The game looks excellent and has a nice distinctive visual style, complemented with a charming soundtrack which is bound to make you smile. It is perhaps a little too easy but epic and imaginative boss battles will keep you on your toes. Even just travelling around Hyrule on the set tracks is a source of joy, often requiring careful planning as well as plenty of toot-tooting on your little horn.

The multiplayer mode is not huge and comprehensive but the competitive battle game is a very enjoyable little bonus that adds some longevity to Spirit Tracks once the main story is dispensed with.
Spirit Tracks is perhaps a little too similar to its immediate predecessor but it also refines and improves upon it and, considering what a great game The Phantom Hourglass was, this is hardly a huge criticism. Even if it is a “proper” Wii Zelda title that you are hungry for, this is a lovely little distraction to while away some of those hours between now and June when E3 should hopefully give us some much anticipated news on the upcoming game! It’s certainly a great way to liven up a dull train journey.

Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing £24.85 @ Shop To [PS3 Games]

Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing £24.85 @ Shop To [PS3 Games]

It almost goes without saying that if you buy one kart racer game then you should go for Mario Kart. However if you don’t have a Nintendo console then you can’t go a-racing with Mario and pals; in fact any games of this type are few and far between for the more “grown up” consoles and so it’s been nice to see Sonic’s thoroughly decent kart outing spread across all platforms.

This week the PS3 version features as one of Shop To’s Star Buys and its price is pretty awesome for such a new game, especially considering its high quality, undercutting nearest competitors Amazon and The Hut’s shared price of £28.93 by £4.

An eclectic bunch have come together to traverse these wacky and wonderful tracks, including seven(!) from the Sonic world—is there anyone who actually cares about any of these characters apart from the spikey blue guy himself?, Ryu Hazuki from the much loved Shenmue, AiAi from Monkey Ball, a team of the little mouse thingys from ChuChu Rocket and, to my joy, Ulala from Space Channel 5. Sadly unlike its Wii and XBox counterparts, the PS3 version does not include any bonus characters.

For single players there are six four-race Grand Prix competitions and 64 offline missions to sink your teeth into and you’ll probably soon find yourself hooked on trying to achieve those coveted AAA ratings for the latter. Of course it’s the multiplayer that is likely to see you coming back again and again and thankfully this is well implemented, both on and offline.

The visuals are snooth and stylish and there is a great collection of tracks, lifted from various Sega franchises and offering a nice variety of race style. The action is tight and fun with solid controls and a decent sense of speed. Much like the portly plumber’s raceways, the courses here are littered with power ups which increase the fun factor but can often add in some controller-thrashing frustration.

Sonic & Sega offers plenty for those who are hankering for some simple, fun racer action. It’s no surprise that it often feels like a Mario Kart impersonator and, really, this only works to its advantage. The biggest complaint I have is that they were not able to include Toejam and Earl on the roster as hoped but at least I can keep my fingers crossed for a DLC appearance from the funky twosome. Click here if you’d like to read our full review of Sonic and Sega.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories £17.95 @ Zavvi [Wii & PS2 Games]

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories £17.95 @ Zavvi [Wii & PS2 Games]

Zavvi are currently selling Shattered Memories for £17.95 as part of their Mega Monday promotion. This is a great deal for both the Wii and PS2 versions of the game but the PSP edition can be found for a couple of pennies cheaper at Asda Entertainment. The next best price for the game on Wii is £23.97 from Tesco Entertainment, while Shop To is the runner up for the PS2, meaning that Zavvi’s deal will save you £6 or £4 depending on your choice of console.

You may want to hurry to take advantage of these deals as they last 24 hours only and stock is likely to go fast.

At first glance the game looks to be a straight remake of the original PSX Silent Hill and, indeed, it starts in near indentikit fashion with protagonist Harry Mason crashing his car and then regaining consciousness to discover that his daughter Cheryl has disappeared. However, once these beginning scenes are dispensed with the game takes a radical turn. The town presented here is a barren and icy wasteland and scenes in a psychiatrist’s office are added to those taking place in Silent Hill itself. Thankfully, the new story is perhaps as deep and emotional as that of the original and, coupled with the taut, chilling atmosphere, offers a haunting experience and moments that may leave you slack jawed and awed.

It is not just the narrative that has taken a sharp detour. The clumsy combat of old has been dispensed with and now you will not need to fight at all, just run for your life. Furthermore, this is the game that “plays you as much as you play it”, meaning that the choices you make during the psychiatrist’s office portions of the game reflect upon your experience throughout the rest of your time with Shattered Memories with changes made to the monsters you face and the appearance, behaviour and even gender of the NPCs that you encounter in your journey through the icy wasteland that is this game’s vision of Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is very well paced, keeping you engrossed in the action, even as you notice the slightly formulaic nature of the gameplay, but ultimately ending far too quickly.  The graphics are great and help to create an, at times, truly disquieting atmosphere, bolstered by Akira Yamaoka’s excellent soundtrack. The puzzles are clever and engaging and interspersed with nerve shredding chase scenes that leave you breathless. Despite its short length the game has surprising longevity as you will want to go back to it to see the different results and ending that you can achieve through small alterations of your own behaviour.Silent Hill: Shattered Memories £17.95 @ Zavvi [Wii & PS2 Games]

If you have the option, it’s highly recommended that you go for the Wii version of Shattered Memories as the graphics are better and the game feels great to play, as if tailor made for the motion sensitive controls.

Bioshock 2 £24.99 @ Gamestation [XBox 360 & PS3 Games]

Bioshock 2 £24.99 @ Gamestation [XBox 360 & PS3 Games]

If you’ve been itching to get back to Rapture but are holding out for a reasonably priced copy, you were probably gutted if you missed Everything Play’s very short lived £25.99 deal but thankfully if you’re quick, you can reward your patience with Gamestation’s even better price of £24.99, which happily includes the PS3 version too. Not only is the first time I’ve seen the price drop below the £25 mark for the console versions of the game but the XBox edition is £3 cheaper than the next best offer from The Game Collection and the PS3 version offers almost a £5 saving when compared to runner up retailer The Hut.

Do hurry though as stocks are limited and, this being a weekend deal, the prices will soon increase again!

This sequel to the fantastic Bioshock sees you take on the role of a hulking Big Daddy from the get-go as you attempt to free Rapture and its resident clutch of abductee Little Sisters from the tyrannical clutches of controlling psychiatrist Sofia Lamb and her army of aggressive plasmid abusing Big Sisters.

Bioshock 2 is a very very good game, with some noticeable improvements over its predecessor, particularly in terms of combat (including the surprisingly good multiplayer campaign), but sadly it is not quite the masterpiece we all longed for.

Rapture itself is still the same beautiful and fasciBioshock 2 £24.99 @ Gamestation [XBox 360 & PS3 Games]nating yet twisted presence that brought so many under its spell during the original game but with its mysteries now laid bare, it doesn’t offer quite such a tense and compelling atmosphere. Add to this the fact that, no matter how hard it tries (sometimes too hard!), the story and the characters therein are simply not as memorable as those found in the first Bioshock, and you have a game that is great but inevitably disappointing to those who, like me, fell in love with the gorgeous dystopia they found themselves in a couple of years ago.

Red Faction: Guerrilla £9.97 @ Dixons [PS3 Games]

Red Faction: Guerrilla £9.97 @ Dixons [PS3 Games]

If no Tonka truck could rest easy in its smug “unbreakable” status in your childhood bedroom and you look upon “shatterproof” as a challenge, Red Faction: Guerrilla ought to set your trigger finger itching. While the game is ostensibly a red person shooter, the real aim is to set about causing as much carnage as you possibly can.

My Memory are asking £2 more than Dixons’, making their price the next best deal for the game.

Guerrilla is set in 2120; the allies of the original Red Faction, the Earth Defense Force (or EDF) are now the antagonists of the tale having enslaved the Martian society in a bid to gain control all of Mars’ resources after Earth’s commodities run dry and the economy collapses. So it is that the Red Faction reforms in order to fight against the EDF’s regime and begin more fair negotiation talks with Earth.

There’s not much to the plot and the characters are uniformly instantly forgettable, not helped by some weak voice acting. Overall the graphics are nothing special, even a bit bland but the explosions look pretty cool and the destruction that you wreak is well rendered. There’s nothing too complex or mentally taxing about Red Faction: Guerrilla but there’s lots of simple visceral fun to be had, at least if you enjoy blasting everything around you into little pieces.  There is an impressive multiplayer, adding longevity to a somewhat shallow single player campaign that can grow tedious.

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel-Collectors Edition £5.99 @ Game [PC Games]

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel Collectors Edition £5.99 @ Game [PC Games]

This prequel to 2004’s action role player Sacred has been available for a couple of years now but is rarely available so cheaply.

The next best price for the game is £7.87 from DVD.Co.UK so, although Game’s version is an exclusive special edition, you stand to save nearly £2 by following up this deal.

Set 2,000 years before the events of the original Sacred, Fallen Angel is set in the land of Ancaria, where the mysterious force “T-Energy” provides all life and is the source of magic. With a high degree of control over this force, the High Elves have become the dominant race in Ancaria. When a power struggle breaks out between two of their factions, over races seize the opportunity to attempt to gain control of the T-Energy which is becoming increasinly volatile and beginning to act as a force for destruction as much as creation.

The plot is not massively involving or thrilling but it does offer some bizarre humour for those that get it and it certainly keeps you busy with a good selection of quests on offer. It’s a solid hack and slash, loot grab affair with a decent variety of enemies and nice enough visuals.

Sacred 2 certainly isn’t bad but it’s not great. If you were considering getting this game then you’d do well to grab it at this price. It’s a bit weird that Game give no indication of what makes their exclusive “Collectors’ Edition” so special and indeed collectible but hopefully it will be a nice surprise!

Toki Tori £1.62 @ Steam [PC Games]

Toki Tori £1.62 @ Steam [PC Games]

Toki Tori started life as a GBA game which evolved into a well received Wii Ware iPhone title and has now found itself a place on PC.
As the PC version was only released in January, I was surprised to see Steam’s price of £3.49 considering the quality and quantity of play that the game offers. However, at its current sale price of less than £2 it’s an absolutely eggscellent (ok, ok, I’ll stop!) bargain and one that I would recommend anyone take advantage of.

Toki is the only escapee of a mass egg-napping and after hatching alone, sets off to recover his shell-bound brothers and sisters. Toki Tori is a puzzle game disguised as a platformer in which you need to guide your chubby little chicken protagonist through various levels freeing his egg chums and using a set range of tools to overcome the obstacles in his way. There are four different zones to explore and around 120 levels so you are not getting a mini game despite the price.

Considering it costs less than a handful of Creme Eggs, I downloaded Toki Tori myself and so far it’s been a pretty great investment. Elsewhere it has raked in pretty much universal high scores with many critics giving it scores in the 90% and above range. The graphics are bright, cheerful and charming with fun cartoony music to match but its aesthetic does not equate to a childish difficulty level. In fact some of the higher levels can be very challenging and you may find yourself grateful for your “wild card” which allows you to skip a stage and progress straight to the next.

Its new Steam incarnation allows you to pick up 31 Steam achievements and offers Steam cloud and controller support.
