Killzone 2 Platinum £9.99 @ Game [PS3 Games]

Killzone 2 Platinum £9.99 @ Game [PS3 Games]

Fixing most of the problems the original suffered from Killzone 2 returned on PlayStation 3 doing what the original should have and that’s delivering a class-A first person shooter. If you’ve overlooked this sequel so far or just fancied giving it a miss then now’s the perfect time to find out what you did indeed miss. Game and now Gamestation both have this listed for £9.99 that’s a good £3 cheaper than next closest Amazon and Tesco.

Despite the original getting some decent reviews from ‘official’ sources it’s widely accepted to have been a lesser game. So it was reassuring that the next-gen sequel turned out to be rather good. If you’ve missed everything about Killzone then it opts for the space scenario from the gaming-trinity of zombie, Nazi, space-aliens as the only possible choices for games developers to choose. Largely we’re told as none of those can sue you. Beside that the other bit of information is that this is a military-shooter, so you should be imagining large space-marine grunts, rolling off semi-literate one-liners. Unlike the original that was set on the besieged Earth, sorry Vecta, the sequel has you taking the fight to the alien world of Helghan.

The gameplay while not quite to the level of squad based does find to continually being accompanied by a grunt or two that act intelligently enough. The same goes for the enemy and it’s certainly a cover and fire game. In its own way it’s a tactical shooter with the emphasis on shooter, the weapons feel realistic and you’ll pitched against mainly the same enemies throughout. Ultimately, if you like this type of approach, it’s rewarding as the levels are varied enough to keep your brain constantly working attempting to out do the enemy. Certainly for a tenner it won’t disappoint.

Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box £4.99 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box £4.99 @ The Game Collection [PC Games]

Take the sandbox idea, throw it at a driving game and Burnout Paradise is what would drop from the sky. Both off and online happy this is a huge driving game and this edition throws in all of the available download content packs including the Bikes Pack, which is almost a new game in itself. At £4.99 The Game Collection is undercutting next-closest Game by £2. So if you feel the call of the open road, get clicking.

One thing Burnout Paradise is not is a precise simulation. If you’re hoping for something that mimics the reality of racing, close the browser, turn off your computer, head outside and go sit in your Ford Fiesta. Burnout Paradise feels like you’ve been dropped into the middle of a The Fast and the Furious stunt scene and if you simply go with it, it can be glorious fun. Possibly that’s a little down to this version being somewhat less punishing that the original. Time limits have been relaxed in the opening stages and generally it feels totally accessible.

The sense of speed in Burnout Paradise is stupendous and it’s really that, which keeps you coming back. The crashes for all their spectacle do get a little tedious and there’s no more sense of progression other than having a new car unlocked, so sometimes for the single player it can sometimes seem oddly unrewarding.

The ‘ultimate’ part of this packages throws in the pay-for Party Pack, which offers pass-the-controller gameplay for a limited-attention-span generation and is aimed more at the consoles than the PC, alongwith all of the freely available DLC. As we mentioned this includes the large Bikes Pack, which adds a frankly excellent and complete bike element to the game including reworked maps and missions. There’s a also a full day/night cycle, which it’s hard to understand how they missed the first time around, plus a ‘restart’ option that enables you to do just that with failed events. Sadly, though, no Big Surf Island included here, but the sheer amount of game on offer enough is certainly enough to keep you entertained for hours on end.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 £29.99 @ TheGameCollection.net [Xbox 360 Games]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 £29.99 @ TheGameCollection.net [Xbox 360 Games]

If you can get past all of the Infinity Ward controversy that’s currently raging around Activision, and fill their stuffed coffers with a little more money, it looks like currently TheGameCollection.net is undercutting everyone by offering MW2 for £29.99. Most retailers seem to still be stocking it for just around £33.90 so that’s almost £4 off. I find it amazing really, as Call of Duty 4 is still selling for around £21!

What can you say about Modern Warfare 2 that hasn’t already been said? Not a lot. We believe it has sold a couple of copies and is pretty popular amongst the kids online that like to question each other’s sexual orientation on a regular basis. If you can also ignore the lawsuit-flinging spat that’s now erupted between Activision and the ex-bosses of Infinity Ward you might be able to enjoy what is a pretty decent first person shooter.

Contrary to the rest of the world we might draw attention to the sheer childlike plotline and the overuse of killing the player’s character at the end of levels for dramatic effect. It’s pretty mind-numbing just how banal the story is. Seriously, the Russians invade simply by deactivating a bunch of US satellites? Have our eyes stopped working? Did the whole of Europe sleep in that day? I’d imagine someone would have noticed a Russian flotilla on the move at some point. But as a visual treat stomping through the suburbs of middle-town America as Russian troops parachute in, and seeing Washington burn is hard to top. And ludicrous plot aside, it’s that experience that anyone into single-player gaming wants.

Modern Warfare 2 does have its ups and downs. There’s certainly a good number of points that are frustratingly scripted and it’s ultimately a short-lived experience (taking just six or seven hours at best) but it is the gaming equivalent of Avatar and has to be seen.

The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena £9.00 @Tesco Entertainment [PS3 Games]

The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena £9.00 @Tesco Entertainment [PS3 Games]

PC and original Xbox owners already know how good the original Chronicles of Riddick game was. So the remixed next-gen version, that could have also vied for the longest named game of the year award, simply took that original game and bolted on a new adventure. A recipe for success? Well almost, but as Tesco is flogging this Vin Diesel vehicle for a mere £9 – the same as out-of-stock Amazon – that’s a good 89p less than SimplyGames.com and at least £3 less than the rest.

Vin Diesel is an odd character, he’s clearly not as meat-headed as any of the characters he plays. While trashy franchises such as the Fast and the Furious keep churning out their formulaic heady-mix of petroleum and testosterone drenched cinematic nonsense, Diesel goes off and forms his own game studio Tigon Studios, which produced the original Escape from Butcher Bay.

This remake works best when it takes Escape from Butcher Bay as its inspiration, which encompasses the first half or so of the game. The strength of the original was that it wasn’t a meat-headed basic first person shooter, the exploration and stealth elements made the game, and any shooting sections were the weaker parts. This kind of begs the question as to why did they then based the entire rest of Assault on Dark Athena on firing bullets? The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena £9.00 @Tesco Entertainment [PS3 Games]

What you’re left with is a weaker shooter than it should be, which is a little disappointing considering the pedigree of the original. It’s still perfectly solid, but there’s not really anything special here, which is a shame. Having said that for £9 there’s no doubt you’ll get a good dollop of gameplay out of this and we should mention it also come packing multiplayer in the form of standard capture-the-flag and deathmatch, if that floats your boat.

Football Manager 2010 £14.99 @ Steam [PC Games]

Football Manager 2010 £14.99 @ Steam [PC Games]

Much like the beautiful game itself, watching the competing duo of Football Manager and Championship Manager is absolute entertainment. Even better, it means management fans will always have the best of all worlds with both trying to outdo each other, and for 2010 it looks like Football Manager is lifting the cup. The good news is Steam is offering a bargain transfer free with 50% off its usual retail price  for Football Manager until 8th March, that’s £14.99, at least a clear pound less than most other retailers.

Overhearing a conversation between Football Manager players is an exercise in blurring reality. Excited ramblings about some talented young Icelandic lad they’ve just spotted, sends your mind wandering to recall as to whether you’ve missed a recent holiday or not. But with even an average player putting in 240 hours of playing time, which is an entire 10 full days of your life, we’d argue management games like this are role-playing games. Just like WoW you disappear into your own fantasy league running every aspect of your own club.

This latest incarnation of Football Manager sees the Champ Man rival picking up its game. A host of visual changes have washed over not only the interface but the matches themselves. Partly to help newcomers ease into things but also because it needed it. The same goes for its new media page that delivers all the news of this fantasy world to your screen and an improved tactics editor that should help beginners wade through this complex area.

Ultimately the 3D matches needn’t be a visual treat for the game to succeed but the additional polish that’s been applied to the 2010 edition, such as a hundred new player animations, helps a lot. If you didn’t pick up Football Manager 2009 and have avoided Champ Man 2010, then this time-sink is waiting to suck you in.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat £14.95 @ Zavvi [Wii Games]

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat £14.95 @ Zavvi [Wii Games]

It’s time to go bananas over this deal, it may be bongo-less compared to the original GameCube version, but with the usual Nintendo flair, this Wii version takes full advantage of the Wiimote. Zavvi is currently selling this with a clear gap of almost £3 over next closest rival, the electronically-resurrected Woolworths, which is stocking it for £17.97. So if you fancy a little monkey business, get clicking.

In a lot of ways the attraction of the original game was entirely down to the supplied bongos. Tapping away on these drove Donkey Kong forwards and slapping them caused him to jump and attack. This is effectively a bongo-light re-release with two new levels and the others craftily revised to up the difficulty levels, reflecting the improved accuracy the wiimote gives you.

As a game it’s a pretty platformer that takes the usual themed-level approach, topped off at the end of each with a suitable boss. The crux of the entire game is to go bananas, which is to say the more you collect the better off you are. Providing more health for the boss battles and pumping up your end-of-game score. This is possibly the biggest sore point for Jungle Beat, it’s over very quickly, even with the extra levels. Considering it’s a revamp of the original you can blast though the initial levels in a few hours. I’m sure Nintendo would point to the additional hidden-levels that are unlocked by finishing the game with enough bananas and by foraging for secret fruit.

Certainly it’s fun to play, the combo actions feel rewarding and it’s rarely punishing if you fail to pull these off, as you simply lose your valuable bananas. At this price it’s definitely worth considering, though fans of the original will have to leave their bongos behind.

Batman: Arkham Asylum £8.75 @ Microsoft Games for Windows [PC Games]

Batman: Arkham Asylum £8.75 @ Microsoft Games for Windows [PC Games]

Holy special offer Batman! If you can get past that this deal is via the Microsoft Games for Windows system then you’ll bag yourself a bargain! With a whopping 75% off the full price this makes Batman: Arkham Asylum a mere £8.75, which from our scan of the internet makes it a good £3 less than next closest Game and Gameplay at £11.99, though they will ship you a physical copy.

You’re playing with fire when you try and create anything around a character as beloved as Batman. So it’s lucky that the developers Rocksteady Studios did something of a good job with Batman: Arkham Asylum. It probably helps that the script was created by award-winning Batman writer Paul Dini, so as gamers for a change we don’t have to sit through dialogue that that seems like it’s the rejected lines from this year’s school play.

Setting it in Arkham Asylum was another clever move, as it instantly locks down the location and handily provides a wide selection of classic Batman villains to draw from. The game itself goes with Batman’s strength and introduces a rewarding and clever hand-to-hand combat system with a third-person viewpoint. Rather than just button mashing or repeating complex sequences, it emphasises timing to pull-off blocks and attacks, all done with a cinematic flare and rhythm that makes the combat doubly rewarding.

But the game is more than just about the combat, that’s more the glue that keeps the other segments seamlessly joined. This is a true action-adventure as you get to draw on stealth elements, explore the asylum’s different areas, along with puzzle solving elements, while the story is driven beautifully along with each appearance of the Joker and The Riddler. There’s something for everyone and especially so for Batman fans, as this truly brings alive the Dark Knight.

Serious Sam HD £5.99 @ Steam [PC Games]

Serious Sam HD £5.99 @ Steam [PC Games]

There’s some serious savings going on over at steam right now, and when they say ‘HD’ we think they really mean High Discount. OK, we’ll stop. But it was just a month ago that Serious Sam HD was discounted to £6.11 on Steam, now it’s down to just under £6, while Amazon and the rest still have it at £14.99 or higher, so you can save a serious £9. If you want to take advantage of the new multiplayer features then on the same page you can grab a four-pack for just £17.98, that’s saving a penny shy of £18 on the original price and almost £6 even over the sale price! So bring your friends along and we can all have fun.

It’d be easy to scoff at Serious Sam, for all the complexity of modern shooters and the depth of story of modern RPGs, a game released back in 2001 will hardly be able to hold a candle up to any of them, right? Wrong. Much akin to Painkiller, a more contemporary game, Serious Sam’s one aim is to give you a big gun, throw legion upon legion of enemies upon you, and let you get on with things. The result was  literally a bloody mess and a whole heap of fun.

It leaned very heavily on what Doom and Doom 2 gave us – hordes of enemies to mow down – and whilst it certainly achieved this, it didn’t achieve the other success of Doom, which was to create a tangible atmosphere. Serious Sam tried but the Egyptian theme was never more than a film-set backdrop to the unfolding mayhem.

This modern remake updates all of the graphics but with all the modern trimmings you’d expect, including high-res textures, HDR lighting and depth of field effects. What really gives it replay-value is the new 16 person co-op mode. It might be flawed, and a little bit dated perhaps, but it’s still simple, exhilarating fun and a game that every PC owner should enjoy.

Peggle Nights £FREE @ PopCap.com [PC/Mac Games]

Peggle Nights £FREE @ PopCap.com [PC/Mac Games]

WARNING! Peggle can seriously damage your work/social/family life, continue at your own risk. It’s disturbing but PopCap are like the crack dealers of the gaming world, they produce some of the most addictive games known to man and here’s your chance to get your hands on one of the most famous for free. You’ll need two email addresses, one to create a PopCap Passport with and another to ‘gift’ the free game to. Just click the link below and follow the instructions on PopCap.com.

While you’re going through the process, here are a couple of extra points people have come across. You’ll need to sign up for the PopCap newsletter, but hey you can always filter it to junk. The registration email can take up to five minutes to come through, so be patient. Finally when you get your ‘gift’ email you’ll need to enter your postal address. For UK residents make sure you leave a space between the two sections of the post code. Otherwise everything should be very straight-forward.

There’s no doubt that if you haven’t experienced the rush of Peggle you better prepare yourself. Never has so much fun been had from a tiny cannon firing balls around a computer screen! Like Breakout on steroids, all you’re doing is clearing orange balls and squares from the screen – but the first time you hear Ode to Joy burst forth from your speakers it’s enough to bring even a grown man to tears. It’s fiendishly clever, guiding you through new levels and leading you on with new power-ups. Much like Pringles, once you pop you can’t stop.

NHL 2K10 £5.95 @ Zavvi [Xbox 360 Games]

NHL 2K10 £5.95 @ Zavvi [Xbox 360 Games]

You might think it’s just a North American sport but ice hockey is alive and well in the UK. OK, so some of its leagues may have closed a couple of times in the last decade, but they’re still going! And there’s nothing sports fans like doing more than reliving their favourite athletic game, slumped in a sofa mashing controller buttons. So the good news is Zavvi has slashed the price of 2K Games’ hockey sim NHL 2K10, it just shy of £1 cheaper than The HUT but way less than half the price of most other retailers. Making this a total bargain.

The question is do you opt for this 2K Games version of hockey or EA’s NHL 10 version? It’s generally accepted that the EA version is the superior game, but that’s still commanding a top-whack price of around £39 at most retailers. The truth of the matter is that this version might not be as good, but there’s nothing wrong with it. In fact you can argue that NHL 2K10 is the more fun to play, as it takes a more arcade approach to gameplay, versus the hardcore ultra-realistic simulation path that EA wants to lead us down.

This is where NHL 2K10 wins, you can just pick up the controls and play – perfect for enjoying with friends online or if you’re crazy enough, sat in the same room. There are some nice additions here such as a two-on-two mini-rink mode, plus an outdoor four-on-four mode. While for the hockey-Statos out there the franchise mode enables more management-based levels of interaction with your team. Follow the finances, player stats, rosters and all of this can be posted to your own online 2K Games blog, which sounds, fascinating if you like that sort of thing. But frankly for £6 even if you only have  passing interest in ice hockey, this could be a bargain.

Wii Sports Resort plus Wii MotionPlus £27.89 @ SendIt.com [Wii Games]

Wii Sports Resort plus Wii MotionPlus £27.89 @ SendIt.com [Wii Games]

If you’ve missed out so far on the must-have Wii accessory of last year then you’ll be glad to hear the price is on the move, downwards. A whole host of shops now stock the wii motion plus for just under the £28 mark but the leading two are SendIt.com and SimplyGames.com, undercutting even ASDA by a couple of pence.

It’s hard to know quite how to take the Wii Motion Plus. On the one hand it could be seen as Nintendo just refining the ability that has propelled the Wii to such success, on the other it could be seen as an odd admission that the Wii’s motion sensing is somewhat ropey and hey kids, here’s a £30 fix. It’s an odd sell but if enough good games are going to make use of it, then picking it up as a bundle makes complete sense.

Shipping with Wii Sports Resort was a safe bet for Nintendo. The original Wii Sports is really what captured every non-hardcore gamers’ imagination and made the collective heart of everyone else sink. But there’s no denying how fun Wii Sports Resort is – just the like the original it works best with friends and family. Everyone can join in and the precision the new controller makes is undeniable. From archery to throwing Frisbees, you can tell your movements are being precisely tracked.

But what of that promise of great games to come? Well it’s a bit shallow at the moment, unless Red Steel 2 turns out to be awesome and going from the original, that’s a big stretch. The only real shining star is the new Zelda. It’s reported that this will make use of the Wii MotionPlus both for sword fighting and puzzle solving. If that turns out to be true it could be the only reason we all need to own a Wii Motion Plus.

SEGA Rally £4.99 @ HMV [Xbox 360 Games]

SEGA Rally £4.99 @ HMV [Xbox 360 Games]

You have to be careful when mentioning the name SEGA around here, it tends to leave people staring wistfully off into the distance, blissfully reminiscing about the olden days and dabbing at the corner of their eyes whilst complaining about dust in the air. Despite its fall from grace, at least one thing SEGA used to get right was the classic SEGA Rally and this 2007 Xbox 360 game ticked all the boxes. At £4.99 HMV has it for a good £4 less than ShopTo.Net.

SEGA Rally should have a soft spot in most over-30’s, as it’s was one of those old-school arcade games that you used to bug your mum and dad for another 50p to play. Despite having graphics that an iPhone can put to shame, it was the arcade thrill that the original instilled, which kept you pumping in the coins. That’s exactly what this revitalised Xbox 360 version brings to your LCD TV.

Lets get this clear, it isn’t a simulation and it’s not suppose to be. Just like the original you’re kept on the straight and narrow by crash barriers that bounce you back onto the track. Rather than using one of the more modern rewind-style cash-friendly functions, take that and throw in an over-the-top drifting model and it’s a recipe for driving fun.

One thing that does age are graphics, just like the original arcade this 2007 games doesn’t really stand-up to the visuals the latest driving games such as DiRT 2 or Forza 3 can pump out, but they’re by no means terrible and the environmental effects of mud and snow are applied so thickly it looks like an explosion in a cake factory. When it was originally released this was a solid, enjoyable driving game. Almost three years on it’s still that and at price that you’re not going complain about.

Nintendo DS Lite Pink £79.99 @ HMV

Nintendo DS Lite Pink £79.99 @ HMV

It’s hard not to admire Nintendo, at almost every turn in recent years it’s lambasted by huge sections of the gaming press for its toy-like attempts at portable and mainstream consoles. But unit sales of over 125 million units for the DS in one form or another is simply staggering. So, why not help prop up Nintendo’s coffers and pick up this bargain from HMV. It may be Pink but you’re secure enough in your sexuality for that, aren’t you? If not HMV have the Red version for £99.99 bundled with Mario Kart DS, which stacks up well in our book.

There’s not much real choice in the hand-held market these days. It is utterly dominated by Nintendo while those plucky upstarts Sony try and distract us with the relaunch of the PSP. The next best alternative is the iPod touch, which Apple has done a fine job of driving into the gaming sector, despite the disadvantage of not having any hard controls.

Effectively any competition for the DS Lite comes more from the DSi and the soon to be released DSi XL. But the DSi is around £60 more just for the microphone and cameras it sports along with an improved processor, but really that makes little difference to the games you’re playing. The new DSi XL is due for launch on the 5th March and looks like it will only be £20 more than the current DSi, but that’s approaching twice the price of this deal for something that plays the same games!

Either way the DS clearly has one of the widest gaming catalogues around and that’s without including the catalogue from the Game Boy Advance, which can be plugged into the cartridge slot.

Brutal Legend £11.99 @ Play.com [Xbox 360/PS3 Games]

Brutal Legend £11.99 @ Play.com [Xbox 360/PS3 Games]

Alternatively titled That Jack Black Game, love or hate him, he plays a central role in this gaming mash-up from development design-guru Tim Schafer. A mix of action-adventure and RTS the whole thing is lovingly linked by its story. Currently Play.com is selling this both for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for a mere £11.99, which is as far as we can find is £3 less than next closest Amazon and HMV.

We’re hardly the biggest Jack Black fans, but the fact this game is put together by Tim Schafer designer of Psychonauts does grab our attention. That was a truly inspired action-adventure game that despite all of its praise was a commercial flop. Brutal Legend is clearly more focused. Tapping into the current rock-interest sets you as heavy metal roadie Eddie Riggs thrown back into a time when rock was born.

It’s a semi-nuts excuse to have an open-world inhabited by demons, vehicles and anything else the heavy-metal imagination can throw up. The games switches from the interesting and absorbing adventure element with its satisfying combat, to the occasional RTS segment. While these aren’t bad we’d have preferred more of the adventure, as where the game excels is when you’re meeting new characters and get to enjoy the dialogue and story. At just £12 there’s certainly a good weekend of entertainment to be had.

Dante’s Inferno £28.85 @ ShopTo [Xbox 360/PS3 Games]

Dantes Inferno £28.85 @ ShopTo [Xbox 360/PS3 Games]

Is this a poor man’s God of War? It seems like it’s turning out that way, but for everyone that’s craving some bloody hack ‘n’ slash, 3rd person action then Dante’s Inferno is the perfect set up. Currently both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are on sale at ShopTo.Net for a good £6 less than anywhere else we can find. Next closest being Coolshop. So get those mice clicking!

It’s either an incredibly bold move, or a move done by the incredibly boorish: Taking a 14th century poem and turning it into an action-slasher strikes us as being something of an idiotic move. On the one hand, great you don’t have to pay any royalties, on the bad, hey we can’t actually use any of the story. So setting aside that pretence what is it?

It’s a game where in the opening scenes you kill Death itself, and steal its scythe. What? Yes, you kill Death and then carry on your merry way for the rest of the game, armed with its scythe. But we’re being snobbish, at its heart Dante’s Inferno is a gorily-beautiful game. The sights and sounds of hell are truly exquisite in their detail, it can get a bit repetitive but it certainly draws you into the environment.

Heavily influenced by God of War, the combat is a messy affair and it’s the saving grace of an otherwise potentially dull game. As you progress you gain more abilities by collecting souls, and an ability tree enables you to pick and choose which new attacks you want. Sounds pretty familiar, we’ll wager, but it’s fairly enjoyable stuff. It’s all been done before and done better of course, but this isn’t a hellish game, it’s just a bit tired.
