Thinking of switching back across to PC gaming after a couple of years out, but wary of Origin and am a huge Battlefield fan. Just how intrusive a platform is it?

In my experience it's not that bad, granted it is a pain to use when playing BF3 as is the strange browser based battlelog system but it's not caused me any major hassles just minor annoyances.
origins not bad at all and frankly trumps steam on some areas (notably shopping for and managing add-ons/DLC, offline play and ease of account management on the store side) though i'd still rather have games on steam thanks to the sales, forums, huge catalogue and sales. and the sales.
BF3's browser is a bit of a pain though, especially as it closes and re-opens the game between matches which (having an old PC)can mean a damn long time staring at the loading screen (game can load in background and popup when ready but in practice that makes it take twice as long).
Yeah, it is only BF3's battlelog which is a particularly pain in the ass. I would much rather I could select the server I want in game but it is a small price to pay as the game can be quite fun.
