Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition Revealed

“New And Original Content” Included

The teaser website discovered last month has now confirmed that an Enhanced Edition of the beloved RPG series Baldur’s Gate is to release this summer. Developed by Overhaul Games, which is a part of digital games service Beamdog, the release reportedly will provide more than just a HD re-skin.

Joystiq have reported that the Enhanced Edition will contain new and original content alongside the original release. A Beamdog representative told them “This is the Enhanced Edition, it's not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update.” Also confirmed was that Beamdog and Atari would be publishing the game, and that work had been ongoing for “over a year.”

As we reported last month, Beamdog is headed by Trent Oster, who had previously worked on Baldur’s Gate, led the development of Neverwinter Nights, and was instrumental in designing the Eclipse engine that was used for Dragon Age. Along with several other original developers from Baldur's Gate's original team, it appears the Enhanced Edition is in safe hands in regards to recreating the feel of the original release. Beamdog are not stopping with just Baldur’s Gate, as it has been confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 2 will also be getting the Enchanced treatment down the line as well.

While I’m sure most of you will have treated yourself to the recent Infinity Engine games’ bundles over on Gamersgate, the news of an updated version of one of PC gaming’s most important RPG titles should get the excitement flowing. [Joystiq]
