There are classic platform titles like the Crash Bandicoot series which just feel out of place and completely incapable of adapting to the era of 3D games. However there are games like Banjo-Kazooie which, even though it hasn’t graced our consoles for something like ten years, suddenly makes a sensational comeback. The latest edition to the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, Nuts and Bolts, is being dubbed as one of the most innovative and original 3D platform titles currently on market.
Although it still retains the character of its various predecessors, there are a few unique twists which provide a fresh new take on the original format and, most importantly, make Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts a hell of a lot of fun. You can get currently get hold of the game for just £7.19 from The Game Collection which is a great deal compared with the next best offer of £9.93 from The Hut. However bear in mind that you need to enter the discount code STUDENT10% to bring the price down from £7.99 to £7.19.
The story behind Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is set in motion when one time arch enemies Banjo and Gruntilda – bored and with nothing better to do than play video games – decide to place a wager. If Banjo can travel across six worlds armed with his vehicle creating wrench he will win the deeds to Spiral Mountain, however if Gruntilda can impede his progress through sheer evil cunning, the prize will be deferred to her. But as Banjo has lost all of his athleticism, he will have to rely on vehicles to get him through the six vast worlds.
Vehicle creation is probably the most original and entertaining part of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. The player pretty much has complete autonomy to create any bizarre contraption they choose. You can opt for some big lumbering tank which can shoot missiles, a hovercraft, a biplane, a helicopter, or even some mad vehicle which bounces around on springs. The creativity which you can bring to vehicle construction and the ease with which the vehicles can be assembled – like some cartoon style Scrap Heap Challenge – is a superb addition to the gameplay of Banjo-Kazooie. Overall it’s a great update to a classic formula and one which really will provide hours of fun.
