Rocksteady creates new canonical character
When Rocksteady revealed their next-gen Batman sequel, many of us assumed that "Arkham Knight" referred to the Caped Crusader himself. Right?.
Well, wrong, actually. Rocksteady are introducing a brand new character -- The Arkham Knight -- who'll antagonise Batman and become part of the wider continuity after the credits roll.
Little is known about The Arkham Knight at present, save that he favours firearms, uses cutting-edge military hardware and appears to subscribe to absolute justice - bringing him into conflict with Batman and other vigilantes. Apparently Rocksteady are terrified at the pressure of bringing a truly new character into the DC universe, but tremendously excited at being able to stamp their own legacy on the franchise.
“The opportunity is exciting, but the expectation [from fans] is off the scale,” Rocksteady producer Dax Ginn told VG247. “That’s why working with DC is so awesome for us, because those guys are so experienced, and it’s obviously something they do a lot of."
“So when the idea was on the table for us to develop our own character and introduce that into Batman’s world, there was so much energy and excitement around it at Rocksteady – but we really were conscious of the value of the collaboration creatively we have with DC to make sure the gameplay role the Arkham Knight has is really reflected in his appearance and his outlook and his perspective.
“That’s not an opportunity that comes along very often, and I think we totally nailed it with this guy.”
We'll find out more about Arkham Knight over the coming months. For now, what do you make of the design?
