Batman: Arkham Origins Screenshots Leak Out

Warner Bros. Officially Confirm Anticipated Prequel

Ah, the circle of life. Game Informer announces exclusive reveal. Pics appear on AGB. Everyone goes crazy.

This time, the reveal in question is Batman: Arkham Origins, which has now been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. Interactive. Though I'm loathe to host the watermarked screenshots and artwork here for reasons of common decency, you can check them out through this link. Black Mask has been confirmed as the major antagonist this time, while pre-Penguin Oswald Cobblepot and Deathstroke will also make an appearance.

I've stashed the official line after the break, including all the PR quotes you could ever want.

Developed by WB Games Montréal, Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the first two critically acclaimed games of the franchise. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young and unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, players will meet many important characters for the first time and forge key relationships.

“Batman: Arkham is a huge triple-A videogame franchise and we are delighted to expand the experience with Batman: Arkham Origins,” said Martin Tremblay, WBIE President. “WB Games Montréal has an incredibly talented team building upon Rocksteady’s award-winning gameplay and technology to deliver a deep, immersive, quality experience fans will love.”

“WB Games Montréal is honoured to have the opportunity to create Batman: Arkham Origins, a new chapter in this amazing franchise” intones Reid Schneider, Vice President of WB Games Montréal and Executive Producer. “We are huge fans of the franchise and are committed to creating an experience that offers players more of what they love, as well as the chance to play as a younger Batman within a fresh storyline and expanded world.”

Set in Gotham City on the run-up to Christmas, Arkham Origins will feature familiar freeform combat, but reportedly draws inspiration from Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock when it comes to the detective side of things. Game's out on October 25th, alongside a downloadable tie-in from Armature Studio.

Loved the first two, so I'm really looking forward to this. I would've preferred they keep things in chronological order rather than go with a prequel, though.

I appreciate a prequel means a few different story lines appear, and characters who might not have made it through the first two games can still feature in the next game - but there wasn't exactly a shortage of possibilities if they'd just continued going forward instead.

And going backwards means that gameplay options become slightly stifled. It'd be silly if he had fancy new abilities and/or toys in this, but didn't have them in the other two games set later than this one, for instance...

Definitely interested because the first two were epic, I'm a bit worried about it being developed by a different studio though.

I never picked up on that (the change of developer).

The concept art all looks very similar to the previous games, but there's a big difference between concept and product of course. They're using the same engine (modified Unreal) from the previous games, and it seems they're being assisted/advised by Rocksteady, so hopefully they'd be hard pressed to screw it up...

Gawd, you've got me worried now!

Bats is starting to look a bit 'Gears of War' for my liking.

He looks cool, but just saying... its the kind of suit he'd put on to fight Superman ('Dark Knight Returns' style), not his every day light weight costume.

I'll be properly worried if they start making him a bit Adam West!

Hopefully this one wont have SecuROM. I've only played the first one, but my brother played both and said he enjoyed the first one much more.
