No it didn't quite make as much noise as Modern Warfare 2, but DICE's return to the rag-tag team of expert soldiers is still an absolutely brilliant game, stuffed with everything you'd expect from the Scandinavian developer - more explosions, more destruction and, as per usual, an absolutely cracking multiplayer mode.
ShopTo are currently offering the Xbox 360 version of the game for £24.85, which'll save you roughly £3.50 on the nearest competitor.
It's clear here that Activision's belligerent franchise has clearly been causing some anxiety around the EA offices because this is a game that clearly seems to have been constructed almost for the very purpose of going toe-to-toe with MW2. The singleplayer has been honed and whittled and more deeply focused, resulting in a more linear experience that some may find frustrating but arguably also provides a certain amount of narrative impetus. There's not really a huge amount of OTT histrionics as in Infinity Ward's epic epitaph.
Instead, the gleeful silliness comes from the new Frostbite engine and, as before, it provides the game with a good deal of urgency. No, not everything is destructible, but a lot of it is meaning that one second you'll be cowering behind a wall and the next you'll be facing a chilly wind and the muzzle of a grinning tank or the business end of an adversary's RPG launcher. It's a lot of fun.
It's the multiplayer, though, where DICE's expertise really lies and it shows. I'm not a huge online multiplayer fan (I nearly cried when BioWare said The Old Republic was destined to be an MMO) but this game offers something for players of all levels. DICE have got it absolutely right with this one: you earn XP for everything, Conquest mode is back, there are boatloads of vehicles, there's a big emphasis on teamwork and squad play and you'll get rewarded for it. It surprised me just how much I looked forward to leaping online and playing this at the end of the day. If you're looking for a new game to set your sights on, I'd strongly recommend to give this one a look.
