Battlefield: Hardline suffering installation issues on PS4

Gamers who have purchased the digital version of Battlefield: Hardline on PS4 are reporting issues for the game's installation in-game. Once the game has downloaded from the store and the latest software patch has been installed, gamers are able to start the game as per normal. Once games are downloaded from PSN, they install automatically on the main menu usually.

However, that's not the end of the installation for Battlefield: Hardline. My own experience so far with a digital copy has been matched with multiple reports appearing online right now. On the game's main menu, they are seeing a screen like the one below. Multiplayer does not appear yet and only Episodes are selectable. Diving in, I found I was able to play the brief prologue level before being kicked back to the menu as the rest of the game has yet to be 'installed'.

It's odd that an install is taking place in game and there doesn't seem to be anything else downloading, not on the PS4's download list anyway. After staring at the screen for a few minutes and not seeing the % go up at all, I decided to leave it be and come back in 30 minutes. An hour later and it had only gone up an additional 3%.

Diving online, I discovered that this was an increasing occurrence. But I did stumble across a thread on EA's Answers forum where the Community Manager was trying to help out. Much of the early advice seems to be based around the users web connection (try to use a cabled connection instead of wireless etc). But hasn't the game already been downloaded? The issue is with an installation, not a download. Once this had been painfully established, it was suggested that maybe restarting the installation might speed it up a little. He also stated, "The general installation process should not take hours though," establishing that this was an issue.

However, this isn't as simple as rebooting your PS4 and diving in.You'll need to start your PS4 in safe mode to clear up the original install block segment. Here's how they recommend you do that:

"You can try to reset your console or to delete cancel and resume the install but that could mean that you need to install the game from the scratch. again. The general installation process should not take hours though.

To reset your console or to rebuild your console data base, you need to enter the PS4 safety mode. To restart or update the system as well as rebuilding the database could do the trick:

Turn off the PlayStation 4 by pressing the power button on the front panel. The power indicator will blink for a few moments before turning off.Once the PlayStation 4 is off, press and hold the power button. Release it after you've heard two beeps: one when you initially press, and another 7 seconds later.Connect the DualShock 4 controller with the provided USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.

The following options are available in Safe Mode:Restart System - Ends Safe Mode and restarts the PlayStation 4 normally.Update System Software - Allows the PlayStation 4 to update the system software via Internet, USB Drive, or Disc.Rebuild Database - Scans the drive and creates a new database of all content. This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items."

The EA CM on the thread was hesitant to recommend a complete deletion and redownload from the PSN store (it's a huge file after all). He did suggest trying to install the game on another profile on the same console.

Other users have reported that they've had to leave the game installing over night with some saying 7-8 hours, while others have had to wait upwards of ten hours. Baring mind this is all 'in-game' you're not able to use your PS4 for anything else while you wait. Personally, I'm thinking of waiting rather than diving into the console's safe mode and rebuilding the database - surely you're asking for trouble messing around there. It's currently going up about 10% per hour. A shame, that opening level was quite fun.

Here in the UK, many of you will be buying the game soon. Do let us know about your experiences of getting the game going and we'd like to hear from both physical and digital owners.

This sounds like a partial download. I am downloading it right now and it first downloads enough to get started. Then it disappears form the DOWNLOAD list and is marked as finished. However it is still downloading in the background. If I go to the BATTLEFIELD and instead of selecting it I click on OPTIONS button and then INFORMATION it has a row that stays "Install progress: 12gb / 21gb " or something. So its still downloading in the background even though the game is not running. Is that the case here? So after it finished from the DOWNLOAD section you still have many hours of download to go but you don't need to be in the game. I all happens in the background. So just try to click OPTIONS on the Battlefield icon (before the folds out) and then select INFORMATION it will have the download details there. FIFA and DYING light do the same thing. After a short while it disappears from downloads and "appears" to be finished.

Went to bed for 5 hours game went from 16-22% in seconds now at 23% ffs guess I'll be playing it in a week....if I'm lucky

You can't be serious? You can play it while it's downloading, yes, singleplayer, it's what most people usually do first anyways. Many games do this and is a feature of the PS4 (and Xbox One too I believe), am flabbergasted the author of this article has never seen this before.

Yes, it might be slow, it happens from time to time with PSN downloads, usually helps to not play anything that requires internet.

What KingKrath said. Battlefield 4 did exactly the same thing, downloading enough from the PS store to allow you to play the first campaign level before switching over to an in-game download that was confusingly labelled an "install" on screen. The idea is nice, that you can start playing while the download is ongoing, but levels too short/files too big mean that no-one actually gets that experience. Add the fact that it completely removes the ability to download in Rest Mode, and it's probably not something they should have bothered with

Its all about patience. Initial 6gb download allows players to play the prologue only which hardly lasts 10 mins. Complete download is 46gb which will take a fair amount of time. I left overnight on a 100mb connection and it was done in morning.
Brilliant game especially blood money and heist.

I am having this same issue, so frustrating. 8 hours now and I am at 36%
Hmm not sure i want to do the safe mode thing either guess ill just leave it for a few days. I hope this is not an indication of things to come.

I've downloaded plenty of games before. Most of them handle the download outside of the game. At 85% 'install' (sneaky in-game download) last night, playing the Prologue was still the only option. This was more annoying as I thought I'd downloaded the game hours earlier during the day. So I turned the PS4 off, ready to play the game after work, but then I've got to wait another 5-6 hours. Not cool.

Uggel  Mar. 19, 2015 at 11:30

Hey
I have downloaded with 100mb line for 12.5 hours now and have 95%..
I have the same problem as the author..
This is not ok.. When it gets 100% i will probably get new problems.

aaameeennn  Mar. 19, 2015 at 17:31

I downloaded the game in 40 minutes no problem once i wanted to play the game it needed a in game installation i m waiting now for 10 hours to see it go to 66% thats not normal!!! 10 hours for 46 %

gofuckyourselfea  Mar. 19, 2015 at 19:16

Dude serious you are so freakin dumb its not downloading it is installing and it is so **** slow that at 6 o'clock i had 15% and it is now 8 o'clock and it's 20% **** ea man **** ****

No dude, seriously, you're the dumb one.

I'm all for bashing EA whenever I can, but this really is downloading. The disc version installs in a few minutes and does not do this. This is typical behaviour of Partial Downloads. It's a fricking feature, look it up, you'll see that other non-EA games do the same bloody thing. Yes, PSN is slow at times and is highly annoying, the GTA Heists DLC took 12 hours, went slow as all hell, but once I quit the game I was playing it went faster, still slow, but went to two hours instead...

Yeah, I've downloaded plenty of games before too, it's still a feature of the PS4, why it is so slow at times I have no clue. Killzone asked me what I wanted to play first, single or multiplayer and then it downloaded that part first, the rest in the background...

Hoppa2  Mar. 19, 2015 at 22:49

Nice going EA... If I knew this I bought the game not digital. Just make one multi-player level available at the same time as the single player mode and a lot of people would be happy. I'm at 22% and if I read the rest of the comment it looks like I'm not playing until tomorrow

With this issue, it only lets you play the first episode, which is about 10 minutes of gameplay, until the install rraches 100%.

That is a bit short, yes, which is indeed something EA decided upon...

You can only play a brief prologue in the single player mode and nothing else.. and that is only like 10 mins of gameplay if even and mostly cutscenes

woooxi  Mar. 20, 2015 at 03:23

Hello I bought a digital copy as well the download was pretty fast 20 minutes or so but the installation that's something else I am finally an 91% after 4 hours of waiting and it's still not finished.

vols36  Mar. 20, 2015 at 04:30

Ok I've downloaded played in episodes and in episode 3 at the aquarium once I get past the guys go to open the door, game stalls a little window is spinning as if it's loading the next part, it never comes. I was told to rebuild the data base, delete reinstall, and this is the third time, it continues to do the same thing in the same spot. Frustrated.

PS4 is performing really bad in general with downloads updates and patches....

Should i have stayed with Xbox?

cotzy  Mar. 20, 2015 at 15:29

15 hours now and I'm at 94% . Thank god for Netflix

HZD  Mar. 20, 2015 at 18:30

Who where those guys at EA saying Hard line won't have a bad launch like BF4 ?

P45s at the ready !

Glad I skipped this installment, EA need to get their act together and get their support staff up to scratch in how things work in the real world.

Monkeys could do a better support job.

wstrain87  Mar. 20, 2015 at 18:43

I have the physical copy and in having the same issue. Install sat at 45% for at least an hour or two. It's moved from 47% to 48% fairly quickly so I'm hoping maybe it will pick up. Some funny noises coning from the machine too.

Wompwomp7645  Mar. 20, 2015 at 20:51

I tried downloading it...waited a full 24 hours and it was at 43%. I figured delete and re download...wrong...im at 13 hours now...40%. This is such garbage. Im done with this game and im done with EA.
