Best Video Game Awards 2009: Shooters

2009 was a damn fine year for virtual gun-nuts everywhere, with various established series yielding some of their finest instalments to date, and a couple of new IPs proving that it's still possible to hold your own in amongst the big boys. From the blockbuster hype and predicted record breaking sales of Modern Warfare to the controversially speedy emergence of Left 4 Dead 2, everywhere you turned there seemed to be yet another fantastic standout shooter. It says something about the quality of this year's output that all of the games on this list offered a different experience to their contemporaries, no more so than Borderlands, showing a genre dominated by franchises that the recession didn't have to spell the end for creative new IPs.

Let's take a look at the contenders, and if there are some you've yet to check out for yourselves click on any of the thumbnails to take you to a price comparison for that particular game:

ArmA II: Armed Assault 2

The tactician's choice, ArmA II was all about the gritty realism, the realistic weapons and the strategic element. In a year where many genre games were bring other things to the table, Arma II's RTS extras helped it stand out from the crowd.

What happens when you grab 17 million different weapons, chuck in some spectacular co-op gunplay, spice it all up with some RPG features and then cel-shade the lot? Borderlands, that's what!

Best Video Game Awards 2009: Shooters

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 was certainly the biggest game of the year, with its Hollywood-esque hype and media controversy, but was it the best? From the favelas of Rio to the snowy wastes of Siberia, Inifinty Ward took us on another fun, fast and at times hilariously farfetched ride.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

With some cracking visuals and sound, Bound in Blood brought the Wild West into our living rooms with a game that positively dripped with character. Again, an underused setting showed that the FPS didn't have to be all about modern warfare.

Halo 3: ODST

Bungie's little treat turned out to be not so little after all. With arguably the best single-player campaign of the series since Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 3's excellent multiplayer bundled in alongside it, ODST proved to be a sweet, if rather short, tweaked take on the Halo franchise.

House of the Dead: Overkill

The Wii has provided the opportunity to not only revisit the classic light-gun games of old, but also revamp the model to suit the 21st century. Overkill's perfect grindhouse presentation, from the grainy visuals to the reams of F-bombs, provided the backdrop, but the game's accessibility and old-school glee made it indispensable this year.

Killzone II

One of the PS3's definite killer apps, what Killzone II lacked in originality it made up for in flawless presentation, gameplay and heart-pounding set pieces. A title that not only finally showed what the PS3 was capable of, but had the gameplay to match.

Best Video Game Awards 2009: Shooters

Left 4 Dead 2

Not even boycott threats and scissor-happy Aussie censors could stop Valve's retuning. Less a true sequel and more of a reshaping, Left 4 Dead 2 simply fixed the broken stuff from the first game and polished the rest. The result was a game that improved on its older sibling in almost every single way.

Best Video Game Awards 2009: Shooters

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

Eschewing the linear 'realism' of other war games, Dragon Rising simply decided to dump you right in the middle of a battle zone and let you work your own way out. From its relentlessly unforgiving game mechanics, to its almost open-world style of play, Dragon Rising provided a fresh alternative to some of the shinier big hitters this year.

Best Video Game Awards 2009: Shooters

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.

Clancy took to the skies this year with a thrilling arcade-style airborne bullet fest. Finally Ace Combat had a contender for the title of Best Top Gun Wannabe. By turning the Assistance OFF, the camera zoomed out for a dynamic dogfighting experience, and you could safely pull off the most thrilling of gravity-defying stunts from the comfort of your sofa.

I'd have voted Dead Space Extraction if it was there.

Adam2050  Jan. 11, 2010 at 10:20

This is going to be a short vote, nothing came close to the all round game of MW2. LF2 was a big disapointment.

ODB  Jan. 11, 2010 at 10:21

HAWX isnt exactly a FPS shooter is it?! Completely wrong genre but an ok game

got to be MW2...though Batman prob GOTY

Gunn  Jan. 11, 2010 at 10:31

Can appreciate that not everyone could manage to play all of these so hard to be completely impartial. Out of the list I've only played MW2, KZ2 and L4D2 and out of those 3 my vote is with KZ2.

ODB  Jan. 11, 2010 at 11:05

KZ2 is good I have to admit I enjoyed it but its way too short and the controls are awful IMO. Havent played online much but I prefer MW2 for that

Chris Lord  Jan. 11, 2010 at 13:30

Argh, difficult choice... Between Borderlands, House of the Dead and Killzone 2 for me. Halo: ODST was just awful imo, and MW2 was very disappointing...

Dr. Bloor  Jan. 11, 2010 at 14:00

Are all Halo games as bad as the first one? It was like an FPS for 5 year olds. I think it had Care Bears in it.

Emma Kelly  Jan. 11, 2010 at 15:24

Looks like MW2 is dominating this vote!

EndlessWaves  Jan. 11, 2010 at 15:45

What sort of a list do you call that? No Wolfenstein, No Shattered Horizon, No Killing Floor and No Fallout 3. I suppose the last may make it in via RPGs but I can't see where the others are going to fit in.

I haven't played any of the games on the list (although I'll probably pick up L4D2 and Borderlands) so I can't really vote but if you do flesh it out a bit my vote goes towards killing floor.

Gunn  Jan. 11, 2010 at 15:53

Seriously the online for KZ2 is better than the bug fest that MW2 is.

Adam  Jan. 11, 2010 at 16:15

Hmmm, I wonder who will win...

No0b.  Jan. 11, 2010 at 17:17

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Now thats funny!

LanceVance  Jan. 11, 2010 at 17:21

I have given my vote to Borderlands for being the only game
to have the nuts to come out 2 weeks before MW2! Its a damn
fine game aswell.

Hampton Cahill  Jan. 11, 2010 at 17:29

Fallout 3 was released in 2008 and so i think it would struggle anachronistically to win Best FPS of 2009.

I haven't played Shattered Horizon or Killing Floor but i've just looked at them on youtube and they both look like they were made by someone with balls in his mouth.

And I can't believe you want Wolfenstein to win an award. Do you hate Jews or something?

Jam  Jan. 11, 2010 at 17:32

Wow, if this was the best of the bunch for 2009 shooters then 2009 was a BAD year for shooters.

Would have voted for killing floor if it was there, certainly won't vote for the MW2, if anything it is a huge step backwards compared to CoD4.

Matt Gardner  Jan. 11, 2010 at 17:35

I agree.

You've got to hand to it to Take-Two and Gearbox....it takes massive balls to not only debut a new IP in such a fiercely contested, franchise-ridden genre, but to do it in the middle of a global recession, AND to drop it within a month of the most-hyped game of the year.

Well played, Borderlands. Well played indeed.

Jerec  Jan. 11, 2010 at 18:02

Killzone 2 for me.

EndlessWaves  Jan. 11, 2010 at 21:19

Fair enough on Fallout 3, as it was getting a lot of game of the year-type awards in the autumn I assumed it had come out this year.

The insults in the rest of the post are completely uncalled for though.

Adam  Jan. 11, 2010 at 21:19

MW2 is just like an expansion pack btw except people don't realize that. Killzone 2 is the best game there by a long way and should have more votes.

Herr Hermann  Jan. 11, 2010 at 21:34

Ja vol I agree! Zey are totally uncalled vor!

Chris  Jan. 11, 2010 at 21:57

My vote went to MW2, but Borderlands is a fantastic game! I'm loving it at the moment!

Triggster  Jan. 11, 2010 at 22:04

Alabaster Codify  Jan. 11, 2010 at 22:06

 "Top 9 excuses to have a poll which Modern Warfare 2 will win" more like.

Triggster  Jan. 11, 2010 at 22:06

I totally agree. Alot of people complained about the controls, they should of adapted. A damn fine game and cant wait for the next one.

dabluone  Jan. 11, 2010 at 23:20

who the hell picked these games?
