Bioshock 2 is a pleasingly decent sequel to a truly excellent game. It doesn't quite live up to the very high standard set by its predecessor but thankfully it's certainly not the unmitigated disaster I was fearing it could be. In fact it even boasts a number of improvements upon the original, most notably in terms of the combat. This goes a long way towards making up for the loss of excitement and power in the narrative. The addition of a multiplayer is also a valuable asset to the game as it is surprisingly impressive and not the token effort that many (myself included) were expecting.
One of the very best things about Bioshock was its setting; Rapture is beautiful yet simultaneously uniquely macabre and disturbing as an environment. This remains the case for the sequel but now that the city has been stripped of so much of its mystery, the atmosphere is now less foreboding and compelling. In combination with a story and cast of characters that are less memorable than those of the original, this gives a game which is very good and well worth playing but an inevitable disappointment to those who adored the first game.
