Amid the recent leak of Game Informer's expose on their third galactic outing, Bioware have been talking at length about the future of the Mass Effect franchise. And while we won't be pitting Shepard against Shepard just yet, the possibility of a Mass Effect MMO in the future "makes sense", according to the Canadian developers.
"We've been trying to think of a way that makes sense for people to experience Mass Effect with their friends," Bioware admits, with multiplayer - thankfully - not making it into Mass Effect 3. “We haven’t yet come up with a way to do that," they explained, but "multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company".
I'll admit, the idea of Bioware shoehorning PvP into Mass Effect irks me somewhat. However, with the almost infinite expanse of the universe at their disposal, not to mention a deep and layered history of species, cultures, uncharted planets and hidden secrets, Mass Effect is ripe with MMO possibility. And Bioware knows it. "Wouldn’t it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense".
While it's obviously just a developer musing out loud, you'd be wrong in thinking Bioware - and publisher EA, in particular - aren't already laying the groundwork for a potential Mass Effect MMO. However, with EA's own assault on genre primed for release this year - Star Wars Old Republic - whether or not we actually see a Mass Effect MMO hinges on that game's particular success. [VG247]
