Birthday Blowout Competition: The Shortlist

To begin with, all of us here would just like to say a big thank you again to everyone who took part in the competition. Whittling down the 144 submissions to a ten-strong list was no easy feat at all. Each of the Dealspwn staff was asked to nominate their top five and the results were collated and measured, with the highest scoring entries - those with the most nominations - making it onto the shortlist. There were some close calls to be made and, as the nominations trickled into my inbox over the course of this weekend, I became so very excited that I may have fainted and fallen off of my chair. The doctors wrote it off as heatstroke...but that's only because I lied.

We've had entries that have made us laugh and cry, made our jaws hit the floor and our gaming hearts sigh, if we could award prizes to you all we would, but sadly mailing out 150 Chupa-Chups would be far from cost-effective. We could only include ten titles in our shortlist, but there were some entries that came very close and so Honourable Mentions go to 'Cooking Motherfucker', 'Mirror's Hedge', 'Marvel Zombies', 'Paxman' and 'Katarmari Damasea'.

Congrats to you all. And so, ladies and gents, we move on to the Dealspwn Birthday Blowout Shortlist - the ten entries, propelled into stratospheric heights thanks to democratic process and all of the Dealspwn staff.

Each staff member voted for their five favourites and those with the most votes made it into this shortlist, so massive congratulations to those who've made it this far. Stay tuned as we'll be announcing the winners later this week, whittling down the list to five and having a final vote to determine the winner.

Again...

Good Luck!

Worth mentioning that although apologies to Lee for not getting through, he has pioneered a trend on the original post which we wholeheartedly encourage....do please let us know what your personal top tens were, which entries you loved, which ones made you laugh or simply bowled you over with their awesomeness. You guys have made this competition a very special one and we'd love to know (as I'm sure other contestants would love to know) which one's y'all have loved.

Congrats to everyone though...it's been a cracking contest :)

Hi,
Where is the shortlist? Couldn't see it on the main comp page.
Mark

Markyboy  Jul. 5, 2010 at 15:24

And - clearly - disregard that. Followed the "recent comments" link initially.

Looking good! Nice to see some of the same ones that made me laugh are up here. I'll be sure to think up my Top 10 and post it! :) I assume the final vote will be by the DP staff? (Better option :))

Andrena  Jul. 5, 2010 at 15:39

Gutted.........but well done to those shortlisted

Matt Gardner  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:13

There'll be a staff vote to determine the top 5 and then those five will be ranked by each staff member from 1 to 5 where 1 is the most deserving. The entry with the lowest score after those have been submitted will be the one to win the iPad. Hope to have a list of winners up on Wed/Thurs

Jpoku  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:14

Loved the shortlist - I liked seeing all of those as they came up through the week - though I would of replaced Black Cops vs Godzilla and Light Drizzle with Zork HD and Sweeney Todd: Sing Dance and Cut.

Honorable mentions to Mario & Yoshi Apocalypse, and Ratchet & Jak

Rycall  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:24

Well that's disappointing :( i knew mine was too "adult" lol

Good luck to those who made it through (even tho a few of those arent original and were posted on B3ta last year)

Anchorman Brawl should win btw

L  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:32

Well I won't pick my own, or say which one it is above, but here's my top 10:

GTA 5: London (WANT!!! This needs to be made. GTA London 1969 wasn't up to scratch, but with the new engine and better graphics I'm sure it would sell well. Shame it will probably end up in Vice City - would prefer San Andreas again over that;). In fact, I'd prefer GTA 5: Edinburgh, but I guess London is more well known!)
TF2 Minesweeper (Liked the style of the cover :))
Cooking Motherfucker (I love Cooking Mama + Gordon Ramsay, so this made me laugh hard!)
Mirrors Hedge (The title alone got me giggling, then the picture)
Red Dead Rabbits (Fitted nicely! Solid cover :D)
Pre Evo (The best of the football ones)
Day Of The Testicle (Classic game, well executed)
ASDA Hero (LOL)
Just Dance (LOL)
Guitar Hero Air (Good cover :D)

Liam  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:35

I guess if there are unoriginal ones (or maybe copied), then they should be replaced by other ones since the main prize is quite hefty!

Rycall  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:45

I'm not saying this as a spoilt loser, my entry genuinely didn't deserve to win... but if you click the link I posted you will see that at least 2 of the entries in the shortlist appear on B3ta and were posted in 2009. If anyone should win it should be someone who genuinely spent time coming up with an idea and designing an original cover, not copying something they've seen someone else create.

Lee Jackson  Jul. 5, 2010 at 16:56

Damn theres loads of different ones on that link!
As a sore loser I would have to say I tend to agree...!

Skanking an idea off another site is one thing - but to create a brand new concept from scratch - with smellovision, various 3d cameras and colour changing helmets - takes great effort! Plus it was such a hot night - I sweated buckets jumping off my bed trying to get the right shot! lol

Liam  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:06

I agree with you Rycall you have a fair point. I only spotted House-Life. Was there any more? I forgot how good b3ta is :)

Rycall  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:08

That's you in your cover? lol
Kudos for the effort, see this is what I mean... it's entries like yours which should be contesting the top 10!

I'm gonna stop this now as I do sound like a sore loser, it's just going to be annoying if a blatant ripoff wins a £500 prize.

Rycall  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:15

Cattlefield has been done before, tho the creator of this one may not have copied it - it could be a coincidence. Also the Tesco one is a famous B3ta iPad joke, but again we cannot prove they copied them.

Also there a few which didn't make the top 10 like Halo Allo.

wasim  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:18

Well done to everyone who made the shortlist :)

Liam  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:24

Did a Google and found nothing, care to show a picture of what you mean? :)

Sam  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:33

My girlfriend was responsible for Halo 'Allo which to be completely fair to her was her own (albeit slightly obvious) idea, and before about 30 seconds ago neither of us had ever heard of b3ta.

Obviously she's not made the shortlist so it doesnt really matter, but i felt compelled to say something. :)

Although it does make me ask the question, as some of these play on words are obvious enough for people to come up with the same obvious joke - something like House-Life looks way too close and er... doesnt 'sound' close enough to be a hilarious pun. i suppose he does look like gordon freeman though.

Sam  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:42

I am obviously a little sad my 'Day of the Testicle' entry didn't make it, but to be honest i was ready to admit that maybe a picture of some massive balls wasn't going to be to everyones tastes, but hopefully it got some laughs :) (although my favourite bit of the whole design was down in the bottom right corner - just in case anyone missed it :)

Personal favourites include:

Red Dead Rabbits - looked brilliant & i actually wanted to play it!
Thundercats - if i saw this in a shop, i would most definitely buy it.
Kim Pong Il - so simple. i laughed a lot.

-  Jul. 5, 2010 at 17:57

I am sure if the ones in question can provide a source file then there are no problems .

mamboboy  Jul. 5, 2010 at 18:29

My vote goes to GTA: London (+1 for the fact it needs to be remade) and Anchorman Brawl (+1 for originality). Both great ideas, and it seems like some thought/effort has gone into the designs. Don't forget this compeition is about games you'd want to see made, and personally some of those in the shortlist, I'd rather not play! :)

I'm disappointed my design wasn't chosen, but I don't think it's fair for people to keep bashing the House-Life design. Ok, it's been done before, but you only have to google "hugh laurie freeman" to see the freeman/laurie mashup isn't just a copy and paste. Unless somebody can prove me wrong, it seems they've done all the editing themselves...

Rycall  Jul. 5, 2010 at 19:27

Yeah my point wasnt that they had simply used someone elses design, it was that the entries werent original. Also youre right about some of the games in the shortlist, I thought we were designing games that people would want to play but (and no offence to the creator) that Tesco game looks like the most un-thrilling game of all time.

Lee Jackson  Jul. 5, 2010 at 19:34

I had you at number two on my list mate!

Lee Jackson  Jul. 5, 2010 at 19:36

Lol yeah, and I spent ages trying to balance the ball on the colander whilst jumping in front of the camera on self timer, but then I had the genius idea of just taking a photo of the 'hat' and slapping it on afterward! lol
