MGS Publicity Stunt Reaches Fever Pitch
In one of the most bizarre video 'interviews' I've ever seen, Geoff Kayleigh quizzed Moby Dick Studio CEO Joakim Mogren about The Phantom Pain, confirming that the mysterious title runs on Kojima Productions' Fox Engine. It's set for a full reveal at GDC, and not to put too fine a point on things, it's also definitely a publicity stunt for something Metal Gear Solid-related.
Gametrailers feature the interview segment in their latest GT.TV episode, the suspiciously bandaged Mogren showed some screenshots and concept art from The Phantom Pain, branded with FOX Engine logos that conveniently let the cat out of the bag. The whole thing is a bit of a farce to be honest (if a funny one, you can watch it from 1:10 onwards), but the news of a GDC reveal ties in nicely with Hideo Kojima attending the event himself.
The Phantom Pain was revealed and trailered at last year's VGAs... and it didn't take long for viewers to put two and two together. 'Joakim' is an anagram of 'Kojima' (though it is a legitimate Swedish name). Bizarre cut-outs in the title font correspond neatly to the phrase "Metal Gear Solid V" or "Metal Gear Solid Vita." The mullet-sporting chap in the screenshot is obviously Snake (or his genetic progenitor Big Boss, or Solidus... a Snake, anyway). It uses the Fox Engine. It's published by Konami. Come on now.
Unless Mogren actually turns out to be Cliffy B under all those bandages, I daresay that the cat may already be out of the bag. Naturally we'll bring you the latest as we hear it, whether this project becomes Metal Gear Solid V, a Vita game or perhaps just ends up being viral advertising for Ground Zeroes.
