Black Friday is coming, sites slashing prices early

Ah, Black Friday. Every year, after US Thanksgiving, the retail world turns into a long weekend of awesome deals and slashed prices, bookended by the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as the Christmas retail season kicks into full swing.

It's a brilliant time of year, and we're going to be here to help you make the most of it!

What is Black Friday? Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving (yes, blame the US), and has therefore been a time when many consumers have had the day off and used the freedom to do a spot of Christmas shopping. As a result, many stores began gearing their key sales towards this date, and it's swelled into global retail phenomenon.

Why Black Friday? Perhaps it's because profits start swinging back into the black again around this time of year. Perhaps it's because of the horrors that customer-facing staff see every year as the stampeding hordes approach their doors. Wikipedia posits that the terms originated in Philadelphia, where it was "used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving".

When is it? Black Friday 2014 is November 28th.

What's Cyber Monday? Cyber Monday was kind of engineered back in 2005 as an online equivalent to the high-street frenzy of Black Friday. However, the whole weekend is basically one big retail festival of sales these days.

But just as Christmas cheer and the Coca-Cola advert flourish earlier every year, so too it seems as though some sites are pitching Black Friday goodness a bit early too. It's still only the first week in November, but there are several places hyping up their Black Friday deals pages already, and Amazon have started dropping lightning deals like confetti.

Here are a few UK pages you might want to bookmark now and keep an eye on over the next few weeks in the hope of bagging some sweet games deals.

  • Amazon: Always a favourite. There haven't been many games popping up in the early Lightning Deals, but always worth keeping a close eye on these. Click here to check out the PC & Video Games deals section.
  • GAME: The purple retailer has set up a landing page for its Black Friday wares, though currently most of the links just lead to GAME's main deals hub.
  • John Lewis: Just a splash page for now, but JL have announced that they'll be price matching their competitors. Although we'll likely see the best prices from specialist shops, we're not counting out the one-stop department stores. They've been known to have the occasional steal when it comes to console bundles.

We will, of course, be bringing you all of the hottest gaming deals across our site, the Dealspwn Twitter stream, and Facebook page throughout the month, we'll be looking at the Winter offerings for the new consoles, not to mention giving our advice on some of the hottest games this Christmas whatever your needs, and if you have any questions or queries, do be sure to pop a comment into our forum.
