Had it been released over here in time, there's a good chance that BlazBlue could well have taken our Fighting Game of the Year mantle off of Street Fighter IV. At a time when SFIV was dominating all on these shores, across the pond all of the noises were pointing towards this little retro-tinged 2D gem.
PS3 owners can find out exactly why for just £12.85 at the moment, courtesy of ShopTo, and saving you around £4 on the nearest competitor. Sadly Xbox 360 players will have to fork out over £15 for the game, but it's probably still worth it at that price.
There's a reason Mortal Kombat's going back to 2D and it's because 2D is better when it comes to fighting games. The presentation here is absolutely top notch, with some stunning effects and beautiful character models and smooth animations. The weapon-based combat succeeds on a number of levels thanks to some deceptively simple two-tone defensive mechanics that allow for a bit of thought and strategy to go hand in hand with frenetic action, and a roster of characters that, whilst small, are all pretty much unique.
Let's be honest though, the only real question you need to ask of a fighting game is just how much fun is it to play with a mate? I'd strongly recommend that you buy it and find out for yourself...if you're a fan of the genre you won't be disappointed at all.
