BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Limited Edition £29.95 @ Zavvi [PS3 & Xbox 360 Games]

BlazBlue, the sublime successor to the Guilty Gear series, is finally hitting UK shores- and Zavvi have a great preorder price for the limited edition. They're currently retailling for £29.95, which is a £5 saving on its nearest competitor, ShopTo. Since the standard edition is hovering around this price, you'll essentially be netting the special edition (with all of its bundled goodies) for the same price as the bog standard version elsewhere.

BlazBlue is a novelty amongst fighting games for a number of reasons. Firstly, it has a decent plot that actually puts the fighting in context. Secondly, it's fully 2D in an age where three dimensions reign supreme... and yet looks beautiful for it. Blazblue is a gorgeous game with fluid animations, high-res sprites and some luscious anime cutscenes.

And we haven't even mentioned the combat yet. Whilst BlazBlue only features 12 characters, each has a radically different moveset and fighting style that requires practice and dexterity to master. This is a tender fillet mignon in a world of thick, tasteless steaks- and fighting game connoisseurs are bound to lap it up.

The Limited Edition comes with a 100 page art book and DVD tutorial explaining some of the more advanced techniques. Considering BlazBlue's complexity, this little advantage could go a long way to ensuring your online success. Oh, and it comes in a special edition box- so it'll look nice on the shelf.

There's a single caveat here, though: the improved BlazBlue Continuum Shift is currently in the pipeline and will be hitting the States this summer. Europe can still expect huge release delays, though, and hardcore brawler fans that are looking for both style and subtly nuanced gameplay would be well advised to consider this preorder deal.

I was going to get this on 360, but this game needs to be played with a decent stick or pad and I have neither atm (waiting for the SSFIV sticks to appear). Hopefully they won't run out of the LE version (unlikely as it's available everywhere and this is coming out 12 months after the initial hype). I'm expecting a price drop on this v.soon as the upcoming release of SSFIV is only a month away
