Bleszinski: Gears Of War Was Originally Never Intended To Be "Dude-Bro"

CliffyB has suggested that Epic's blockbuster action series - Gears of War - was originally supposed to be far more serious in tone than it eventually became.

"I didn't always make these dude-bro games at Epic," he said. "The intent was to make [Gears of War] a lot more Band of Brothers and take it a lot more serious."

According to Bleszinski, though, the issue was that Epic hadn't done a story-led game in a while, and when it came to the concept art, the "hulked out" Marcus Fenix was apparently too cool for the studio to ignore. But he'd like to one day move towards a more serious tone.

"If we get around to ever doing more Gears games, I hope we can continue to drift back more towards a Christopher Nolan type dialogue as opposed to a Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher Batman," Bleszinski said. "But that's way down the line."

Bro, we think that'd be off the chain, dude! [IGN]

I don't get why a WWII style G.O.W hasn't been done long before now given all the mechanics are in place, I remember thinking the same thing playing gears when it came out. That it would lend itself to an excellent WWII narrative title.

You can kinda see this was what they were going for but tbh i think Cole was the worst offender here rather than the art direction.

That said i think they have missed the boat a bit now as the market is saturated with waist high cover shooters....

Also 'bro' don't lump Burton in with Schmacher! The Burton films dialogue is great! It's neither anorexic nor flabby. It may not have the muscularity Nolan's has in places, but its not over-developed staring at itself in the mirror either.
Ya know, I think...

Yeah, Burton's stuff was great in it's day... nolans will probably date badly too. That's the trouble with Scene stuff.
