I was tentatively excited about A Boy and His Blob This loving "reimagining" of the 1989 NES release features a delicate and charming art style that immediately captured my imagination but sadly while the game is good and certainly filled with charm, it is not the new classic that I was hoping for.
Both Amazon and Play are offering the game for £14.99 before the price is hoiked up to £18.85 at Shop To. While both prices are equal, Play are also giving away exclusive artwork cards with every order of the game while stocks last. These are really nice and, considering that the art style is no small part of the game's appeal, definitely sweeten the deal.
After the planet Blobolonia is taken over by an evil emperor, one brave little Blob runs away to earth to find a saviour and returns with the titular Boy to put things right.
The story is sweet and the relationship that develops between Boy and Blob delightful, while its appearance is nothing short of lovely. The hand drawn style matches the whimsical tale perfectly. There's a decent difficulty curve, punctuated with challenging and fun boss battles and a nice mix of puzzler/platformer action. Sadly the game is rather let down by its controls, which are both overly complex and sluggish at times, and by some jarringly load times. A Boy and his Blob is definitely worth adding to your Wii collection but sadly not the absolute must-have many were hoping for.
