Alternatively titled That Jack Black Game, love or hate him, he plays a central role in this gaming mash-up from development design-guru Tim Schafer. A mix of action-adventure and RTS the whole thing is lovingly linked by its story. Currently Play.com is selling this both for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for a mere £11.99, which is as far as we can find is £3 less than next closest Amazon and HMV.
We’re hardly the biggest Jack Black fans, but the fact this game is put together by Tim Schafer designer of Psychonauts does grab our attention. That was a truly inspired action-adventure game that despite all of its praise was a commercial flop. Brutal Legend is clearly more focused. Tapping into the current rock-interest sets you as heavy metal roadie Eddie Riggs thrown back into a time when rock was born.
It’s a semi-nuts excuse to have an open-world inhabited by demons, vehicles and anything else the heavy-metal imagination can throw up. The games switches from the interesting and absorbing adventure element with its satisfying combat, to the occasional RTS segment. While these aren’t bad we’d have preferred more of the adventure, as where the game excels is when you’re meeting new characters and get to enjoy the dialogue and story. At just £12 there’s certainly a good weekend of entertainment to be had.
