When Activision bucked the Call of Duty trend back in 2007 – opting to make a first person shooter which wasn’t set during World War Two – they unleashed one of the best, most critically acclaimed FPS titles of recent times. The whole gaming community let out a collective gasp of astonishment upon its release. The reviewers were wowed, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was crowned IGN’s Best Xbox 360 game - not to mention top selling title of 2007, with 7 million copies sold by January 2008.
Even when contending with the likes of Killzone 2 several years later, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is still considered by many people one of the top FPS titles on market. So you’re intrigued to see what all the hype is about, the GOTY edition of Call of Duty 4: MW is currently going for £23.99 on Amazon. According to price comparison the next best deal comes in at £29.79 from Simply Games.
The single player campaign in Call of Duty 4:MW alternates between the British SAS, in which the player assumes the role of Soap MacTavish, and the American Special Forces. The gameplay differs for each, with SAS missions focusing more on stealth while the American squad missions consist of reclaiming ground and have a greater emphasis on large scale engagements. Graphically COD:MW is stunning, and the in game physics engine even provides a realistic feel for ballistics with bullets able to penetrate particular pieces of scenery.
On the downside the single player campaign is surprisingly short which is a little disappointing, and, for someone who enjoys more spontaneous tactical first person shooters like Operation Flashpoint, the missions sometimes feel a little contrived. The game still has that linear feel of its Call of Duty predecessors, but that said, its superb visuals and the overall intensity of the gameplay more than compensate for this. Although single player mode is short, online multiplayer will have you hooked for months -so it’s still great value for money. All in all, if you love first person shooters, COD 4: MW 2 is simply a must have…
