It was a game we just couldn’t seem to get away from around the time of its 2009 release. Wherever you happened to turn, from Newsnight to Radio 4, all you saw were grey-haired academics, passionate journalists, and anxious sociologists debating Modern Warfare 2 and its controversial level ‘No Russian’. Indeed, just after its release, it felt like the game was causing more concern and gaining more publicity than an American High School shooting.
But thankfully, Infinity Ward’s sequel to the awarding winning/record breaking original Modern Warfare wasn’t destined to crumble under the weight of its own hype. And although it’s inevitable that some were going to accuse it of being overrated, Modern Warfare 2 is still a pretty special FPS.
So if you’re on the hunt for a cheap deal, the best price is currently going on The Game Collection where Modern Warfare 2 will set you back £26.95. Play.com did have it going for under £25 but that was annoyingly short-lived offer, and if the original MW is anything to go by, it’s probably going to be some time before the sequel falls in price.
Like its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2 involves overlapping plotlines where the player undertakes missions as both the US and British SAS. The whole story is predictably ludicrous and the often takes things to silly extremes, but Infinity Ward have managed to create a virtual war experience which surpasses even the original in terms of drama and intensity. The single player campaign involves around 7 hours of gameplay – although, like the original, the game’s longevity lies in its multiplayer. Even if you don’t think MW2 was the best title of 2009, it’s a fine FPS which certainly deserves a place in every shooter fan’s collection.
