A hardcore FPS? On the Wii? By Treyarch? It'd be really fashionable to lay into this one, but thankfully, it's actually a very capable shooter that ranks as one of the best on the console. Play have lowered their prices to £12.99, which will currently save you around a quid compared to Amazon Jersey.
You know the drill by now. Horrors of war, frantic set pieces, a wicked arsenal... you know, it's a Call of Duty title. However, the control scheme and sensitivity can ultimately make or break any Wii game... and luckily, World at War brings it home with an intuitive (and above all, working) setup. The nunchuck thumbstick controls basic movement while the Wiimote deals with aiming- and bar an oddly placed grenade button, it works extremely well. The Z trigger allows you to stare down the ironsights- and feels natural and devoid of the usual gimmicks.
Expect the usual: big explosions, sobering footage and gritty gunfights. And an inappropriately fun flamethrower.
Oh, and it's worth mentioning that the Wii version of World at War offers one of the most refreshing and hilarious cooperative modes out there. Rather than entering splitscreen, your mate can jump in arcade-style, controlling an extra reticle and enjoying a retro lightun experience as you move and shoot. It takes a minute to get used to, but hey. A zapper game mode also turns the experience into a lightgun rail shooter... which, frankly, is never a bad thing.
