Is there any way of calming down a NPC you've attacked in Dark Souls?

attacked the guy sat on the bench just outside the first town and now every time I respawn he instantly attacks me. I almost managed to kill him (took 15 minutes!) but then I ran out of estus flasks :-(

Not 100% sure but I think you need to visit the priest on top of the belltower (after you ring the first bell) and get him to absolve your sins. Havent had to do this myself though but apparently its rather expensive.

Yep, spot on answer, he won't revive any NPC's you have killed but he will calm them down (for a hefty fee)

Are you kidding me!!!! way back when the game first came out in the UK, I accidentally slapped andre of astora with a greatsword (complete lapse of concentration) and the guy tried to do me in, had to kill him because he wouldn't leave me alone.....wish I'd known this way back then D:
