Sony To Bring Qriocity To Europe

From Euro Qriocity to Black Ops MP Blowout News Roundup 2nd September 2010

They say that curiosity killed the cat, but now Qriocity is gunning for bigger game. iTunes. Sony will be launching their digital distribution platform for music, video and even e-books in Europe by the end of the year, with designs on getting a slice of the lucrative download pie.

“We are excited to offer our customers high quality, cloud-based entertainment experiences across many of Sony’s network-enabled devices. Services ‘powered by Qriocity’ will revolutionize the way that users play, listen, watch, share, communicate, learn, discover and create their digital entertainment content.”- Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai, President of Sony’s Networked Products & Services Group

This bizarrely named platform (which is a nightmare for spellcheckers everywhere) be rolling out for PS3s, Bravia televisions and VAIO PCs in the UK and four other European countries. [PS3 Center]

Treyarch Unleashes Black Ops Multiplayer Details

From Euro Qriocity to Black Ops MP Blowout News Roundup 2nd September 2010

Treyarch and Activision has finally shot the lid off Call of Duty: Black Ops’ multiplayer features. A lot is riding on the successor to Modern Warfare 2 (with Activision keen to improve on its predecessor’s record-breaking sales figures)… and whilst we’ll still be able to kill people with big guns for points and rank, there are a fair few major differences this time around.

First of all, a new currency system has been introduced. Known as COD Points (insert fish joke here), this cash can be used to purchase specialised challenges or actually gamble on high-stakes player matches. Known as “Wager” matches, these games are sure to be far more personal and intense than anything we’ve seen in Call of Duty before. The trailer (below) demonstrates various new game modes, including a “sticks and stones” gametype that limits armaments to crossbows and knives; and the insane “One In The Chamber” experience that looks to be incredibly tense. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the video’s got to be worth checking out. [Courtesy of VG247]

Gun customisation has been kicked up a notch: with players now able to trick out their beloved boomsticks with skins, clan tags and logos as well as the usual gamut of modifications. Last but definitely not least, a new botmatch option will also allow cautious players to learn the maps and gain some valuable practise without damaging their all-important victory ratio.

Oh, and there’s going to be an actual, factual minigun. Brutal.

We’re absolutely psyched for Black Ops’ multiplayer… but do you want to know more about the singleplayer? Why not check out my Gamescom impressions of two Vietnam-themed levels!

First Resi 6 Info Coming “Soon”; May Have Move/Kinect Support

From Euro Qriocity to Black Ops MP Blowout News Roundup 2nd September 2010

Resident Evil 5 provided a critically acclaimed new focus for the series, but proved incredibly divisive with fans . In a new interview with Spanish gaming site 3D Juegos, Resi producer Keiji Inafune stated that Capcom would “soon” be releasing some juicy details about the next game in the series.

Details are very thin on the ground this stage, but we know that Jun Takeuchi was angling for a franchise reboot. Unfortunately he now won’t have anything to do with Resident Evil 6- so it’s anybody’s guess. Yes, that is an invitation.

The interview went on to discuss Inafune’s opinions about on Playstation Move and Kinect, which prompted the producer to offer the following tidbit:

“Both [devices] will not be necessary for the players, but will offer many possibilities. As with Resident Evil 6, soon will have news about it …”

From Kinect’s Continental Controversy to Valve’s Three Surprises – News Roundup 1st September 2010

No European Kinect Voice Control At Launch

From Kinects Continental Controversy to Valves Three Surprises News Roundup 1st September 2010

Last week, we received an ominous report that Kinect’s voice control features wouldn’t be activated at launch. Microsoft later refuted the controversial allegation from MCV… but as I mentioned in the update, they remained suspiciously cagey about whether all languages will be supported. As it turns out, Kinect will be denying voice control to a lot of potential buyers this November.

The Kinect software will only recognise American and British English, Japanese and Mexican Spanish when November 10th rolls around, meaning that mainland Europe will have to wait until Spring 2011 for an update. Most vexingly, fluent English-speaking continental gamers and even Canadians won’t be able to activate Kinect’s voice controls until next year since the Xbox 360 is strictly region locked.

I’m sure that most of our readership won’t be affected, but I’m still annoyed (but not surprised) by yet another potential publicity disaster for Microsoft’s peripheral. My hands-on time has convinced me that Kinect is an immensely capable piece of kit… yet as it stands, Microsoft appears to be actively attempting to run it into the ground with a blunderous campaign. Discuss. [Eurogamer]

Valve To Deliver 3 “Big Surprises” This Year

From Kinects Continental Controversy to Valves Three Surprises News Roundup 1st September 2010

Valve’s Gamescom showing was interesting but fairly unremarkable- and worlds away from Gabe Newell’s ridiculous E3 presentation earlier this year. However, Newell has promised that we’ll be shocked by no less than three revelations over the next twelve months.

“I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn’t going to stop any time soon. I’m just laughing because… people will be shocked again.”

“We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least.”- Gabe Newell to PC Gamer

Valve’s last “big surprise” was confirming Portal 2 and Steamworks for the PS3, so it’s possible that we might be seeing some more loving for Sony’s console. However, it surely must be time for a new Source engine, Episode 3 or Half Life 3 itself to make an appearance. Or all three. Here’s hoping. [PC Gamer via CVG]

Xbox 360 D-Pad Redesign Hitting November 9th

From Kinects Continental Controversy to Valves Three Surprises News Roundup 1st September 2010

The Xbox 360 controller is a nifty piece of kit. It’s ergonomically-sculpted, comfortable and perfectly weighted… but the D-Pad is sadly lacking thanks to  clacky and unresponsive 8-way controls. However, a redesigned controller with an impressive new look will be rolling out this November; featuring a D-Pad that can be transformed from a traditional 8-way input into a raised traditional 4-way  pad depending on player preference. This promises to be perfect for fighting games, SHMUPS and, well, pretty much everything.

Check out a video of the new peripheral in action below, courtesy of the indefatigable Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb. Stateside gamers will be able to get their hands on the new controller on November 9th for $64, and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for news of a European release. [Major Nelson]

XBLA Roundup: Aliens, Zenos and Zero Zombies

XBLA Roundup: Aliens, Zenos and Zero Zombies

This week’s Xbox Live Deal has a distinct otherworldly flavour. Or, to put it bluntly, the aliens are coming! Three games and a map pack have had their prices slashed- and as usual, click the links to check them out or download the demo from Xbox Live Marketplace. Note that only Gold Members can access the deals, and that you’ll need to log in to see the updated prices.

Let’s start with Zeno Clash. It’s a bizarre, sinister and utterly first person bonkers first person brawler that’s powered by Valve’s venerable Source engine. I rated it very highly in my full review,  and suggest- nay, urge you to take the plunge and at least try out the demo. It’s quite unlike anything else out there- and improves on the PC version with new challenge modes, cooperative shenanigans, improved graphics and a vastly superior voice actor replacing one of the horrendous characters. Ever wanted to assault a one man band with a pair of fish? Give it a go.

Atlus Dissolved, Team 17 Goes Solo

From XBL Gold Gouging to Diverging Fortunes News Roundup 31st August 2010

The harsh financial climate has been taking its toll on every player in the industry, both major and minor. Studios and publishers have been forced to adapt or die (or both), and today brings two very different fortunes for two very different companies.

First up, JRPG publisher Atlus has been dissolved by its Japanese parent company in order to concentrate on “more profitable areas.” Atlus are best known for the Persona series, though they were also overseeing the worryingly controversial Catherine and and ACE Team’s next bizarre offering. There’s apparently an indication that the brand and company might live on in some form, but not without a massively reduced staff and rebranding. [Eurogamer]

On a much more positive note, legendary British developer Team 17 has shrugged off their publisher to become a self-publishing studio. We can expect a digital distribution-based sales model from the guys that brought us the Worms franchise, Alien Breed, Body Blows, Super Frog and… unfortunately… the latest Leisure Suit Larry abomination. Every developer gets one, I suppose. We wish them the best of luck. [MCV]

Microsoft to Raise Xbox Live Gold Prices. A Bit.

From XBL Gold Gouging to Diverging Fortunes News Roundup 31st August 2010

Microsoft have announced that they’ll be hiking the price for Xbox Live Gold membership from 1st November. The States has been hit with a seriously nasty $10 increase, but luckily us Brits will only have to pay one pound extra for official monthly membership directly from Microsoft. Annual prices should remain unaffected.

Naturally, we’ll continue to bring you the best prices for Xbox Live Gold membership- but I’d seriously consider cancelling your monthly subscription and grabbing an annual card if I were you.

Monday Night Combat Free DLC Details

From XBL Gold Gouging to Diverging Fortunes News Roundup 31st August 2010

Monday Night Combat was the wild card of this year’s XBLA Summer of Arcade. As an independent IP, it lacked the household name of Guardians of Light and the pretentious hype of Limbo. Thankfully, MNC turned out to be an absolutely fantastic blend of team shooting and tower defence; and fans will soon be rewarded by a patch and some free DLC.

The patch will fix a few technical issues and improve the netcode, while the DLC pack will apparently contain “new content”. Some more maps would be nice. Or, you know, a straight-up deathmatch gametype. Two more content packs have also been announced, but we can expect to pay top dollar when they roll around. [1UP]

Vanquish Demo Deploys Today

From XBL Gold Gouging to Diverging Fortunes News Roundup 31st August 2010

We’ve been featuring a fair few trailers of SEGA’s upcoming Sci-Fi shooter on our news roundups these last few weeks… on account of it shaping up to be ridiculously badass. If you’ve been left weak kneed and salivating by the Vanquish mix of fast-paced cover shooting and bareknuckle brawling with massive robots, you’ll be delighted to know that the demo is out later today on Xbox Live Marketplace and tomorrow lunchtime on PSN.

You’re going to need a bigger gun. If fututistic gunslinging floats your boat, download it, play it and let us know what you make of it!

New Move Trailers Show off Swords, Stretchy Faces and Working R.U.S.E. Controls

From RUSEs Smooth Move to the Miners Relief News Roundup 30th August 2010

Sony has released a new tech demo for Playstation Move. Virtual swords, giant hands, stretchy avatar faces and a Minority Report-esque interface all make an appearance… but two minutes in, the we get to see a demo of a generic RTS build working with the peripheral. And I mean, really working. Enjoy. [via VG247]

The fidelity demonstrated throughout the tech demo is extremely impressive, but I’m still personally unconvinced that the Playstation Move currently offers anything that the Wiimote (with Motion Plus) can’t do. Still, if it can finally fix the problem of console RTS controls, it’ll certainly make a believer out of me… and it will if the following demo from iWaggle is to be believed. [iWaggle3D]

Dead Rising: Case 0 Delayed? No. [Updated]

From RUSEs Smooth Move to the Miners Relief News Roundup 30th August 2010

The Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable prequel for Dead Rising 2 was originally set for a September 3rd release, but the Japanese and American version has unfortunately been delayed due to a mysterious content issue. Apparently the trial version contains elements that aren’t appropriate for a free demo… whatever that means. Your guess is as good as mine.

Case 0’s story takes place three years before the start of Dead Rising 2, and chronicles Chuck’s’ escape from Las Vegas. There’ll doubtlessly be some juicy backstory to catch up on, but apparently any earned experience and cash will be carried over into the main game. Capcom haven’t announced a new release date- but naturally we’ll keep you updated once we hear anything about the PAL version.

Update: Capcom has confirmed that only the Japanese version has been delayed- and we should be on course for a 3rd September release. [via Kotaku]

Trapped Chilean Miners Get PSPs

From RUSEs Smooth Move to the Miners Relief News Roundup 30th August 2010

33 Chilean miners have been trapped 2300 feet below ground level for the last fortnight- and due to the extreme depth of the mine, they’ll be there for several months more. Daily essentials can only be delivered down a narrow pipe within a plastic cup, but apparently Sony’s handheld will be going deeper underground along with the regular supplies.

Whilst it’s easy to point out a few flaws in this plan… such as the PSP’s annoyingly short battery life compared to the projected 3-4 months of subterranean captivity… anything that can possibly help these poor guys deal with their awful predicament has got to be worth a shot.

Either that, or Sony’s decided to proactively start burying the PSP.

From Robot Babies to Valve’s Half Life Movie – News Roundup 29th August 2010

Valve: No Half Life Movie Unless We Make It

From Robot Babies to Valves Half Life Movie News Roundup 29th August 2010

Who wants a Half Life movie? Anyone? No? Of course not. A mute protagonist and two dozen hours of physics-based puzzles wouldn’t work as a film… and yet plenty of studio offers and wild rumours have been flying around over the years. Buffy creator Joss Whedon was erroneously rumoured to be slated for the directorship earlier this year… but Valve boss Gabe Newell has now stated that a Half Life film could only be produced in-house or not at all.

“There was a whole bunch of meetings with people from Hollywood. Directors down there wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they’d bring in [writers who] would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.”

That’s when we started saying: ‘Wow, the best thing we could ever do is to just not do this as a movie, or we’d have to make it ourselves.

Personally I’m a fan of the first option… but considering that hilarious and successful ‘Meet The Team’ shorts, Valve might have what it takes to pen a worthwhile script. [PC Gamer]

Would you watch a Half Life film? Want to pitch an idea? Should directors just stay the hell away from our beloved games… or am I being too harsh on the concept? Have your say in the comments!

Birth by Sleep Shuns PSP Go

From Robot Babies to Valves Half Life Movie News Roundup 29th August 2010

In case you still were clinging to the sad delusiuon that the PSP Go is anything other than a miserably failed experiment into the future of downloadable digital media, Square Enix has delivered the final piece of evidence. Sorry.

We recently reviewed Square’s upcoming Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep as the finest spinoff to date and a “fitting swan song for the PSP”… but PSP Go owners simply won’t be able to play it. Square have confirmed that there are no plans for a downloadable release in the forseeable future- so sorry, Kingdom Hearts fans, but it’s UMD or bust. [Kotaku]

Tots On Bots: Wii Fit Board Converted to Motorised Baby Chariot

From Robot Babies to Valves Half Life Movie News Roundup 29th August 2010

Awww. A long slow bank holiday Sunday occasionally calls for a soft story, and luckily the Ithica University ‘Tots On Bots’ project has provided us with an absolute doozy. The aim of the research is to provide babies that suffer from physical disabilities with a means of getting around, using a Wii Fit Balance Board as the input mechanism for a motorised chair. Apparently even disabled children have an innate desire to move towards their intended objective, and the weight shift is picked up by the peripheral and allows them to explore their surroundings. Heartwarming, yes, but it’s also great to see videogame tech powering an invention that could potentially revolutionise special needs education (if the study proves successful). Naturally a sonar system defends from untoward crashes, and a remote control allows parents to take over in a pinch.

Here’s some robot-powered baby footage for your perusal.

Telltale Games Tease Awesome Crossover

From Telltales Quadruple Crossover to Bulletstorms Quadruple Shotguns News Roundup 28th August 2010

Telltale Games have taken a huge portfolio of hilarious catalogue under their wing. Lucasarts legends Guybrush Threepwood, Sam and Max and have joined the ranks of Homestar Runner and Strong Bad… but according to a new teaser trailer, Telltale may well be bringing several series together along with a couple of very surprising cameos.

Max’s floppy ears and Strong Bad’s boxing gloves are easily recognisable, but if I’m not much mistaken, that’s Penny Arcade’s Tycho on the left. And… the heavy from Team Fortress 2?

Before you get too excited, it’s possible that this may just be advertising some sort of bundle pack that includes a selection of games from each series.

On the other hand, this could well be a dimension-hopping, fourth wall-breaking crossover of insane proportions. Now get excited.

[Thanks, GT]

Starcraft 2 Patch Adds 3D, Brings Balance

From Telltales Quadruple Crossover to Bulletstorms Quadruple Shotguns News Roundup 28th August 2010

It’s been a month since Starcraft 2 hit the shelves- and to celebrate, Blizzard have released patch 1.1 to take care of a few little details. NVIDIA 3D vision support has been enabled, and destructible rocks have been added to the map editor.

A slew of unit tweaks and nerfs have also come into play. Protoss Zealots and warpgates have had their build time significantly increased to avoid devastating Zealot rushes; and the Zerg Ultralisk does less damage against armour. Many Starcraft 2 players have been whining about the Terrans being overpowered (especially Zerg commanders who have real trouble breaching Terran siege lines)- and Blizzard seem to have taken this complaint to heart by nerfing a whole bunch of their mid to late game units. You can swot up on the full list of on the Starcraft 2 Community Blog… and moan about them here.

Hecaton and Quad Shotguns: Bulletstorm Dev Walkthrough

From Telltales Quadruple Crossover to Bulletstorms Quadruple Shotguns News Roundup 28th August 2010

We were psyched in May. We were psyched at E3. We were psyched at the Gamescom EA press conference. And thanks to a developer walkthrough of the Gamescom 2010 demo, we’re psyched right now.

Bulletstorm is going to be absolutely ridiculous and we can’t wait to be a part of it. As producer Tanya Jessen will explain: four-barrelled shotguns, enormous bosses and hilarious kill combos are going to provide a breath of fresh air from all the gritty cover shooting we’ve been doing recently. The walkthrough explains a fair few more details about the Burnouts and Cliffy B’s desire to shoehorn a quad shotgun into the Unreal franchise.

From Developers Limiting Kinect’s Potential To A New UK Gaming TV Channel – News Roundup 27th August 2010

Tsunoda: Kinect Can Support More Than Two People, Limitations down To Developers Not Hardware

From Developers Limiting Kinects Potential To A New UK Gaming TV Channel News Roundup 27th August 2010

Apparently Kinetic is perfectly capable of supporting more than two people, but that the launch titles have been limited by the developers rather than the software. Speaking to Videogamer.com at Gamescom last week, Xbox General Manager Kudo Tsunoda.

‘I think that it all depends on the kind of experience that you want to build,” said Tsunoda when presented with queries on the subject. “Certainly if you look at a game, go down on the floor, Dance Central is already incorporating a lot more than two players. So you know it’s not necessarily any kind of limitation as much as it is developers just trying to customise the experiences around what they think is the best way to play.’

Having seen Kinect’s debug wireframe control mode pick up people on a perfect 1:1 basis, and considering the variable lag we found when checking out the camera for ourselves it’s not surprising at all. What is worrying are all of the rumours and hearsay pointing to Microsoft not opening up the platform properly to developers, which was a running theme we overheard a number of times on the trade floor during some covert eavesdropping. Kinect has huge potential and, as Tsunoda notes, it will improve over time, but with more and more features disappearing from launch it’s hard not to see the clouds of disappointment looming on the horizon. Sony: New IPs Define Success, Not Beating The Competition

From Developers Limiting Kinects Potential To A New UK Gaming TV Channel News Roundup 27th August 2010

More fun chatter from the last week, as SCE WWS European VP Michael Denny told OPM that it’ll be their strength in new IPs rather than kicking the downed corpses of their competitors that will define Sony’s success…and we’re inclined to agree with him.

‘In a year like the one just gone, you look at a game like Heavy Rain,’ said Denny.’A lot of people questioned whether that was risky and whether it [could] stand up. But I think that’s what really brings the pleasure of working for Sony first party – we’re willing to take some risks and look at innovation. I think that what that game’s delivered is fantastic – it’s not only new IP, but I think it’s created a new genre. [It's had] not only great critical acclaim, but great commercial success as well.’

Considering Sony’s ever expanding stable of first and second party development talent, their impressive, genre leading list of exclusives, Nintendo’s preference on regurgitation rather than original innovation and Microsoft’s rapidly expiring laundry basket of ideas, we’d go along with Denny’s assessment of the situation. Finally, it would seem, the long game plan that the PS3 was initially ridiculed for is beginning to pay off. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below! [CVG]

Only 2% Of Britons Prepared To Buy Into 3D

From Developers Limiting Kinects Potential To A New UK Gaming TV Channel News Roundup 27th August 2010

It’s time for the results of another survey, and this time it’s 3D in the hotseat. Mere weeks after a Japanese survey revealed just 30% of the public to be interested in 3D comes a similar survey of British folk conducted by YouGov and Deloitte. Out of the 4199 people questioned the results suggested that, quite frankly, that we British couldn’t really give much less of a damn about 3D, with only 2% indicating that they’d consider purchasing a 3D TV set in the next year.

With Microsoft watching from above, refusing to commit to anything before seeing whether or not other companies’ heavy investiture goes tits-up, and Nintendo hawking their own glasses-free 3DS, it’s only really Sony who’ll be concerned by this. I think some of the 89 people who said might reassess their choices when it comes to the crunch too. [VG247]

UK To Get It’s Own Gaming TV Channel

From Developers Limiting Kinects Potential To A New UK Gaming TV Channel News Roundup 27th August 2010

Ginx TV UK is aiming to be the first dedicated gaming TV channel in the UK, and will be streaming into homes from November, according to CEO Michiel Bakker. Bakker, one of the founders of MTV back in 1987, is hoping to bring the same level of trendy cultural appeal to gaming that MTV did for music and, speaking at Edinburgh Interactive yesterday, it would appear that all of the pieces are in place and set to go:

‘Launching our channel in the UK, the world’s second largest videogaming market, will propel Ginx to the big league. The next step for me is to accelerate the roll-out of fully localised channels in key markets around the globe,’ announced Bakker. ‘Video gaming is the only massively mainstream entertainment genre without a dedicated channel. My ambition here, is to do for gaming what MTV did for music. Video Gaming has broken through into mainstream entertainment, yet is thoroughly under-represented on TV.’

We’ve had DJs, MTV popularised the VJ…is the GJ next? Frankly I think they should just bring back a floating head of Patrick Moore. That’s all we really need. But we want to know what you think. Excited by the prospect of gaming television, or worried that it’ll be absolutely dreadful. Stick your thoughts in the box at the end! [Joystiq]

PSN Roundup: Store Update 25th August 2010 Shank, 3D MotorStorm & Budget Heavy Weapon

Rejoice Playstation fans! Heavy Weapon, probably one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played (sometimes I hear my flatmate murmuring it in his sleep), is 50% down in price this week so more of y’all can get involved with shooting down a endless communist airforce with an atomic tank as yetis and the odd dinosaur mince about in the background. Sony Expects Chinese Whisper Success For PS Move

From Shanks Kinks to Chinese Whispers News Roundup 26th August 2010

The motion control wars are about to kick off. We’ve had the initial skirmishes at E3 and Gamescom, but Sony have predicted low day one sales of Playstation Move when it’s released this coming September. UK managing director Ray Maguire expects that word of mouth will fuel and exponentally expand on a slow initial adoption.

“Move is a natural extension in the same way as we brought EyeToy to PS2. Exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it’s a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.

“Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn’t with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful.”

Personally, I think that he’s right on the money. It’s difficult to describe motion control using words or even video- and both Move and Kinect will start to sell much faster once y’all have been able to have a go yourselves. [Gamesindustry]

From Shanks Kinks to Chinese Whispers News Roundup 26th August 2010

Is nothing sacred? Apparently we’ve tapped the cliched fantasy settings absolutely dry for MMO inspiration, because FIAA is converting the Old Testament into a browser-based massive multiplayer experience. Rather than a traditional loot grinder, Bible Online resembles the classic Age of Empires as you’ll build up a nomadic tribe and lead them to victory. You’ll meet classic characters such as Abraham along they way… though we’re not sure if they’ll be playable yet. Here’s hoping that Goliath will be a top-tier unit.

After the initial cynicism wears off, the biblical setting actually starts to make a lot of sense. Plagues? Pestilence? Firestorms and pillars of salt? Suddenly Diablo III’s upcoming skillset seems a little underpowered.

You can even join the beta if you’re so inclined. [Bible Online via Kotaku]

Shank Devs Working On X360 Glitches; Fix in Sight

From Shanks Kinks to Chinese Whispers News Roundup 26th August 2010

Shank, the recently-released brawler, has been polarising critical opinion as well as its two console audiences. The PS3 version is working perfectly, but unfortunately the Xbox 360 version suffers from chuggy cinematics and some glitched achievements.

A fix for both problems is apparently on the way… but if you’re buying the Xbox 360 version, here’s a heads-up. Do not unlock the full game after getting an achievement in the trial version as it will glitch. Also, beware for slow cinematics due to (apparently) a slower disc transfer rate compared to the PS3. Still, it’s unbelievable that cutscenes aren’t running smoothly when streamed from the hard drive…

We’ll soon have a review for you soon enough. [Shank]

Mega Man Online Trailer: Apocalypse NOW

From Shanks Kinks to Chinese Whispers News Roundup 26th August 2010

Oh great, it’s time for another twee and cheesy Mega Man trailer…

Oh. My. God.

The newest trailer for Mega Man Online isn’t pulling any punches. Expect murder, mayhem, epic anime street riots and some fully dark stylings. As a mashup of every Mega Man era, this trailer really brings it all home into a surprisngly consistent context. Or, in other words, it looks badass. Don’t take my word for it, mind.

Kojima Productions: Japan is “Really Ready” For Multiplatform Development

From The Japanese Multiplatform Revolution to Alien Swarm AI News Roundup 25th August 2010

Apart from a brief foray onto the PC (for Metal Gear Solid and MGS2) and Xbox, Kojima Productions has remained faithful to Sony consoles over the years. Now, however, they’re gearing up for a multiplatform release of MGS: Rising and a 3DS version of Metal Gear Solid 3… and they believe that Japanese developers has to look to multiplatform publishing to survive.

“I think it’s very important for the future of Japanese publishing. We see publishers — Capcom have started a little bit earlier than us — and I can say most of the Japanese studios have seen the importance of going multi-platform, and our studio as well.”

“I think we’re now really ready to go multi-platform at once, I mean development cycle wise. I think this will be a normal trend for Japanese studios in the future.” - Shigenobu Matsuyama, MGS Rising creative director

Matsuyama was also surprised at the popularity of PC gaming in the West, and stated that they’ll be looking to support the personal computer market “more seriously” than before. Releasing MGS: Rising on the PC is a great start. [Kotaku]

Will this move towards multiplatform development help pick up the sluggish Japanese software sales? Or is Bioware’s savage denouncement of “complacent” Japanese developers right on the money? Only time will tell- but let’s face it, Kojima Productions will probably be just fine.

Alien Swarm Gets AI Director

From The Japanese Multiplatform Revolution to Alien Swarm AI News Roundup 25th August 2010

Remember Black Dog and Valve’s free Steam shooter? It was difficult to see how its mix of frenetic shooting and class based upgrade system could get any better… but now they’ve found a way. The new Onslaught mode “introduces an AI Director that dynamically generates swarms of aliens based on several factors, such as the squad’s stress level.” This mode will apparently work on any difficulty level and will provide a unique experience each time.

Black Dog’s developers were leveraged into the Left 4 Dead franchise, so it’s not surprising that they found the time to tweak the director AI for aliens rather than rabies-infested civilians.

Do you need another reason to pick up this epic free game? Go get it! Now!

New Vanquish Gets Harder and Faster

From The Japanese Multiplatform Revolution to Alien Swarm AI News Roundup 25th August 2010

Are we excited for Vanquish? Oh yes. We’ve been covering its mix of slick combat and uncharacteristically fast cover tactics very closely these last few weeks… and we’ve got some more high octane trailerage for you.

This new trailer details “bigger guns” and the epic disaster movie setting… as well as a triple pack of new weapons that’ll be bundled with preorders.

No Kinect Voice Control or Video Chat at Launch (?)

From Kinect Cut Confusion to Black Ops Mods News Roundup 24th August 2010

I love the idea of Kinect. I really do. Which makes it all the more annoying when Microsoft constantly seems to mishandle every single aspect of its marketing and design.

The latest news from CVG is that Kinect’s flaunted ability to leverage powerful voice recognition software into controlling basic console functions will not be activated  Remember those excellent trailers of families controlling the Xbox 360 with nothing but a word? Flicking through menus or starting DVDs with a simple phrase? It looks like we’ll have to wait some time for feature to become a reality- which is arguably a full half of Kinect’s functionality.

In other news, the video chat software will also not be shipping at launch. Once again, this core selling point will hit at an unspecified later date. [MCV]

UPDATE: Microsoft have refuted this story, though it’s possible that only certain languages may be supported at launch. We’ll follow this one up- and don’t yet know about the fate of the video chat software.

Things could be looking better for Microsoft’s upcoming motion control peripheral, but Kinect’s lead creative assures us that it will grow organically and offer new game experiences in the months and years after release.

“you’ll see [Kinect] evolve as a platform over time, see it as something that will extend not only through Xbox but could be applied through a lot of different mediums.”-Kinect creative chief Kudo Tsunoda [VG247]

Will Kinect be an evolving platform or a train wreck in motion? Disappointed at the delayed features? Have your say in the comments!

Sony Exploring Online Passes

From Kinect Cut Confusion to Black Ops Mods News Roundup 24th August 2010

EA (and subsequently THQ) has rolled out the Online Pass, a code that unlocks the online functionality of a title and requires owners of used copies to pay a supplementary fee in order to gain the According to the SCEE president Andrew House, it seems that Sony might be eyeing up a piece of the action for themselves.

“On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that. And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content.” -Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Andrew House

This is odd news from Sony, who already sell a premium online service in the form of Playstation Plus. We’ll keep you updated- but in my opinion, Sony won’t change their policy on free core online play. This is hopefully just a flash in the pan caused by an ill-advised quote. [Eurogamer]

PC Black Ops Will Have Mod Tools

From Kinect Cut Confusion to Black Ops Mods News Roundup 24th August 2010

The PC community can exponentially multiply a game’s lifespan, value and replayability with aftermarket player-made content… and in an exciting turn of events, Treyarch have announced that they’ll be opening up CoD Black Ops for modding after release. Details are thin on the ground, but apparently a degree of modification will be possible after Treyarch have finished polishing the core game.

Whether this new functionality will allow easier hacking or exploitation of the multiplayer modes remains to be seen. However, it’s still a step in the right direction. [Call of Duty Community Forums]

EA Will Not Bow To Medal of Honor Controversy

From Red Dead Banhammer to EA Taliban Firestorm News Roundup 23rd August 2010

EA’s decision to let gamers play as Taliban insurgents in the upcoming Medal of Honor reboot has been causing a considerable amount of controversy, with even UK Defence Secretary Liam Fox urging retailers to boycott the game. In no uncertain terms, Fox has called out the title as unpatriotic and disrespectful. [Yahoo News]

“I am disgusted and angry. It’s hard to believe any citizen of our country would wish to buy such a thoroughly un-British game. I would urge retailers to show their support for our armed forces and ban this tasteless product.”

EA, however, are remaining resolute in the face of this incoming fire- and are very reasonably pointing out that they ought to be free to tell an Afghanistan war story without needless restrictions that doesn’t affect other media.

“At EA we passionately believe games are an artform, and I don’t know why films and books set in Afghanistan don’t get flack, yet [games] do. Whether it’s Red Badge Of Courage or The Hurt Locker, the media of its time can be a platform for the people who wish to tell their stories. Games are becoming that platform.” - EA Games president Frank Gibeau [Develop Online]

Good points all, but at the end of the day, any publicity is good publicity. Where do you stand on the issue? Drop us a line in the comments!

Hackers Beware: Red Dead Banhammer Hits Tomorrow

From Red Dead Banhammer to EA Taliban Firestorm News Roundup 23rd August 2010

Got yourself a hacked Red Dead Redemption save file? Well I’d get rid of it smartish- because Rockstar are giving you fair warning.

Tomorrow, Rockhammer will be banning users with hacked multiplayer save files outright- and singleplayer saves that boost experience points will be removed from leaderboards.

To avoid the coming storm, hacked save files will need to be deleted today- and you’ll need to start a new game and reach McFarlane’s ranch to retain your Social Club cheats. Multiplayer gamers will need to complete a single game or Gang hideout. You have been officially warned.

Chart Update: Kane & Lynch Top, Modern Warfare Highest Ever

From Red Dead Banhammer to EA Taliban Firestorm News Roundup 23rd August 2010

It’s time to take a look at this month’s sales figures- and it seems that IO’s two foulmouthed killers are bringing home the bacon. While we felt that Kane & Lynch 2 could have been a lot better in the full review, the duo have secured first place in the multiplatform charts.

Despite calls for boycotts after the Infinity Ward debacle, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the best selling UK game of all time. It’s passed the milestone set by Kawashima’s Brain Training in only 41 weeks… compared to 36 months that Brain Training took to overtake GTA San Andreas.

In other news, Sniper: Ghost Warrior managed to claw an impressive 13th place in the UK sales charts. Considering its less-than-stellar reviews (even from us), this is a real coup for City Interactive. [Gamesindustry]

Sony Jailbreak Pirates… Under Threat From Piracy!

From Portal 2 Co Op to Pirating The Pirates News Roundup 22nd August 2010

This week brought us the (sadly inevitable) news that the PS3 has been completely hacked to play backup games and movies by copying Blu-Ray discs to the Hard Drive. Known as PS3 Jailbreak, this applet uses a combination of software and a USB dongle. We take a dim view of piracy here at Dealspwn… but in an ironic twist, the Jailbreak software and device has itself fallen victim to imitation and subsequent competition.

PS3 Jailbreak are now urging consumers to support their developers by buying the “original solution” in the wake of their own piracy device being pirated. There’s something… genuinely poetic about the whole situation.

Portal 2 Dated, Co-Op Gameplay Trailered

From Portal 2 Co Op to Pirating The Pirates News Roundup 22nd August 2010

During our Gamescom preview, we learned that Portal 2 is slated for a February 9th release… and not much else. We were hoping to get some more information about the cooperative mode, but luckily GT managed to get an extremely short gander at how it’s going to work.

For your delectation: robots, terminal velocity and a button slam dunk.

Torchlight XBLA & PSN Release Ready for Christmas?

From Portal 2 Co Op to Pirating The Pirates News Roundup 22nd August 2010

Deathspank gave us a funny, flawed and surprisingly pretentious taste of downloadable loot grinding- and it’s practically alo0f on both XBLA and PSN.  However, Runic Games’ Torchlight is headed to both downloadable marketplaces and has now been strongly hinted for a Christmas release.

In an interview with Joystiq, Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer revealed that they were looking for a release “by the holidays”… and that the sequel would also be heading to consoles after the springtime PC and Mac debut. [Joystiq]

Realtime Staff Sacked En Masse

From Portal 2 Co Op to Pirating The Pirates News Roundup 22nd August 2010

A while back, we hypothesised that Scottish Studio Realtime Worlds (creators of Crackdown and ABP) was on the ropes… and it sadly seems that our fears were confirmed. Over 60 staff members were laid off in a brutal speech that forced them to march out individually to collect their severance package and leave the building.

At least they aren’t going to have to worry about employment. 23 have been rehired for a new project, and from the whispers that we heard on the trade floor, a number of other big-name developers are doing their best to secure some experienced talent on the cheap. [Gamesindustry]
