Cave Story 3D Confirmed For UK

Cave Story 3D, the revamped version of Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya's remarkable indie platformer, has been confirmed and dated for the UK. It will feature new content, updated visuals and... well... a glasses-free third dimension for the 3DS. Full details below.

Cave Story originally released as a freeware PC indie title back in 2004 (you can legally download it here amongst other mirrors), and garnered huge critical acclaim for its blend of traditional action platforming with adventure, exploration and even some light RPG elements. It was singlehandedly designed by the legenary Daisuke Amaya- and is considered to be a seminal example of its type. Don't take my word for it.

An updated port hit WiiWare last year (again managing to secure an excellent critical response), and after a scant few months in development, developers NIS America and Nicalis Inc are set to bring the Cave Story experience to the 3DS this summer. We learned about the US launch window a couple of days ago... but now they've confirmed the project for a "summer" UK release, it's time for us to start getting excited about it.

New 3D graphics and extra content has been slated for Cave Story 3D - though we hope the saving system will be a little less restrictive this time around.

NIS America is said to be thrilled about their partnership with Nicalis Incorporated, and producer Jack Niida has suggested that Cave Story 3D will open up the experience to a new generation of gamers.

I feel great possibilities working with Nicalis. They're both skilled and dedicated with making no compromises. I think fans of the original Cave Story will be pleased with this latest incarnation.

Also through this partnership, we would like to bring new life to the legendary game and make it accessible to a new range of audiences

Cave Story 3D is set for a summer release, and we'll keep an eye on it.

Any news of any game coming to the 3DS at this time is good news, given the current dearth of software. Much as Super Monkey Ball 3D is a real killer app :S.
