This week: Drift Runners 2
Coming off like a cross between OutRun, Micro Machines and Burnout, Drift Runners 2 is a little top-down racer from Long Animals with a kick-ass soundtrack and a simple, yet gloriously effective, gameplay mechanic. In control of your little cutesy car, you'll spend most of your time time skidding wildly around corners to boost your turbo meter and fending off your fellow competitors.
Using just the WASD keys to steer, and the Spacebar to activate your turbo, DR2 is a game that's incredibly easy to pick up - and the early tracks are very forgiving to the newbie - but tricky to master. The lates slaloming courses require a great degree of skill and timing to navigate, and if chasing pole position is too easy for you over the 25 tracks here, then racking up the many achievements sprinkled in amongst the racing action will be sure to keep you coming back.
Drifting itself is a little to easy to jump straight into, and the problem doesn't come from attempting to get your car to skid, but to know when and how to pull out of it effectively without smashing into objects and resetting your boost meter in the process. If you're anything like me then you'll keep coming back to try and snaffle up those last few elusive achievements, lured in by the fast-paced driving action. It's not hugely original by any stretch of the imagination, but Drift Runners 2 proves to be much more than the sum of its influences.
