This week: Let It Glow
I might just be addicted to physics based puzzlers. The thing is that although it's a relatively saturated scene online these days, so many of these gloriously simple yet fiendishly addictive games fall down because they don't quite get the basics sorted. Let It Glow is a game that follows in the familiar footsteps of titles such as Wake the Royalty and Super Stacker, this time encouraging you to remove obstacles and rearrange levels through inertia and gravity to align power conductors that allow a stream of electrical energy fizz from source to light bulb. There's a catch though, you have to maintain that power long enough for a halo of light to form around the bulb.
The result is a simple physics puzzler that ticks all of the right boxes and does all of the basics very well. You won't find originality here, or anything to blow your mind, but if you'r ea fan of the genre, you'll find a variation on a theme executed incredibly well. Let It Glow won't win any prizes, and it comes with no real surprises, but that doesn't really matter. Like all of the best examples of this genre, this is a game that combines nuanced mechanics with a need for careful timing for maximum enjoyment. There are few levels that will certainly require one or two attempts, but half of the fun of games such as these is in trial and error. Let It Glow can't offer you broad, expansive gameplay, but it goes about its business incredibly competently, never failing or frustrating you but rather offering gentle, near hypnotic puzzling.
