This week: Mechanical Commando 2

There are some Flash games out there that challenge the way you think, some that show you a gaming perspective you'd never seen before, artistic games that take a unique look at life and then put you in the driving seat with the click of a mouse. But Mechanical Commando 2 is not one of those games. Instead, our first offering for this weekly series showcases some of the finest points of gaming that the entire industry was based on: namely, blowing stuff up.

Click To Play: Mechanical Commando 2This top-down shooter from Berzerk Studio doesn't break the mould as such, but rather allows the gamer to relieve some work-related stress, work through some lingering relationship issues or generally go soul searching by jumping into a mech and going round turning things into rubble and paste.

There's a story, sort of, but what it boils down to really is a series of winding maps with a start and finish point, a truckload of enemies standing in your way, and your mastery of the WASD keys and your mouse. The main objective is to get from A to B, but the game provides a little more scope by offering optional side-quests for added XP that can be spent at the end of each level on meaty upgrades, weapons, armour and more.

Whilst Mechanical Commando 2 might not rank to high on the originality charts, there's no denying its capacity for fun. Stomping around in a mech is one thing, but clambering into the armoured shell of the boss you've just defeated and rolling around the map bristling with cannons that dispense fiery death is something else, and is a woderful reward in itself. And when the game begins to turn up the heat, tossing tanks and helicopters and giant mobile platforms of rockety doom at you, the frantic action hits fever pitch and all of your cares ebb away.
