This weekend saw thousands of Halo and machinima fans flock to Austin, Texas for the Rooster Teeth Expo, at which 343 Industries were naturally keen to drop some choice details about the upcoming Master Chief Collection. A new trailer hints at The Arbiter packing some cloudy motives this time around, which we'll be able to expand upon by finding hidden terminals throughout the campaign, while fan-favourite Halo 2 map Coagulation is getting a massive new overhaul.
Oh, and they've decided to strap guns to the Mongoose, creating the appropriately-named Gungoose. New trailer and intel below.
First off, the new Terminal Trailer gives us a look at the expanded lore tucked away into the darkest corners of the remastered Halo 2 campaign. It's bound to leave Halo lore-hounds slavering, but the Arbiter's narration is intriguing to say the least. [via Gematsu]
"I have had many names in this long war. The humans knew me as the destroyer. To the Covenant, I was Supreme Commander. The Prophets named me Arbiter. And your Master Chief calls me Friend. How well do you know your friend, human? And what will you call me when you learn the truth of what I have done?"
What exactly have you done, Thel 'Vadam? Though The Arbiter proved instrumental in bringing about the Covenant Civil War and the Great Schism, leading to the end of the devastating intergalactic conflict, it's quite possible that his goals have changed in the last few years. Will he prove to be an enemy in Halo 5, perhaps aligned with another Covenant splinter group?
We'll have to wait to find out, though naturally we'll be busy enough with the Master Chief Collection's outrageous multiplayer suite that contains over 100 maps including numerous fan favourites. Of all the levels, though, one tends to hold a special place in Halo players' hearts: Blood Gulch and its Halo 2 upgrade Coagulation. 343 has announced that the latter is being fully remastered for the Halo 2: Anniversary edition, with brand new 1080p visuals and retooled geometry. No screenshots as yet, but the concept art is rather lovely.
On the subject of concept art, though, behold this beautiful monstrosity:
Not content with roadkill and backseat gunners, 343 Industries has decided to strap a brace of machineguns onto the Mongoose ATV, transforming it into a ridiculous little light attack vehicle. We don't know whether the aptly-named 'Gungoose' will feature in the campaign, but apparently it will star in its own multiplayer gametype, Gungoose CTF, balanced for the new Coagulation map amongst the other five remastered levels in the Halo 2 Anniversary Edition.
