Welcome back, Commander. The Command and Conquer series is a much loved mainstay of the RTS genre, and most of us will be sad to see it go. Tiberium Twilight, the final chapter of the franchise, is slated for release on March 19th- and preorder deals are already stacking up. Coolshop is currently charging £22.99 for the preorder with free delivery, which is a saving of £4 compared to Amazon.
Tiberium Twilight marks a departure from the familiar harvest, harvest, harvest, tank rush, harvest formula by introducing control nodes that need to be captured and defended in order to win the match. Base-building and turtling will be streamlined with the addition of mobile 'crawlers' that can deploy units as well as hold their own in a firefight. A simplified build queue and RPG upgrade mechanics will round out the package. It's clear that EA Los Angeles are attempting to update the gameplay with elements from more recent RTS games (such as Dawn of War II) in order to remain competitive as well as providing a more immediate and intense experience.
Previews and screenshots also indicate that Tiberium Twilight will have a much darker, grittier tone than its predecessors. I'm personally very worried by the news, as the campy big-budget cutscenes really made the series stand out from the crowd. The promise of more quality hammed-up acting from Michael Ironside kept me glued to Tiberium Wars, and I hope that the final act in the saga won't descend into becoming yet another bland post-apocalyptic drudge.
Here's hoping that Tiberium Twilight will take Westwood's beloved series out with a bang!
