Call me a pessimist but is there any good reason, apart from a game being crap, why a publisher would play hardball about early reviews. And I'm talking about BI.

EDIT. I have thought of a reason. Some sites/mags pay for scoops.e.g. IGN :-

Thanks Matt.

I really don't like this idea of distributing review copies only a day or two (if that) before a game gets released. I appreciate they need to avoid too many leaks and spoilers (of code as well as story/spoilers) but it just makes it look like they're trying to hide a poor game.

Is that something that's on the increase, or has it been like this for a long while now?

I guess back in the day we got our reviews from a printed magazine so they had to be distributed early - but I like to read a review before a game comes out, not after.

- Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments

Awesome... can't wait for this. I hear Frogwares are going to use the Unreal Engine now, instead of their own clunky one, which was the only big thing letting these games down.

Then all they need is some voice actors who know how to use their voice for acting and this would be an awesome game.

Also, looking forward to your Persona 4 review... been tempted to buy this since I got my Vita.

UPDATE: Naruto is coming this evening. The Persona 4 review (we didn't get code for that, so bought it) will be up this week, it's been a backburner one as there've been other priorities. The short version: Probably one of the best JRPGs to be found.

The Frogwares double will probably go up later this week too, though it should be noted that we do occasionally keep a preview or two back for gap-plugging.

@Late: The Bioshock thing is very odd indeed. However, we don't have a debug unit for X360 or PS3, so we have to wait for hard copies. It's really strange, though.

It varies from publisher to publisher, from game to game, and even for the major sites it can be pretty inconsistent. I would have expected early code and written NDAs up the ****, to be honest.

In the interests of transparency over BI, here's the response I got:

"There are always concerns about security, spoilers etc, so a handful of mags and sites are having review code delivered early via Portcullis and some pretty onerous tech requirements.

"For the rest of us, we have to wait for promos – and because it’s a Tuesday release, there’s a real risk they won’t be here in time to send on Friday… So nothing clandestine here, just a pain in the ass scheduling issue."

That's from Feb 28th.

Heard anything on The Walking Dead, or are they just blanking everyone?

MattGardner  Mar. 18, 2013 at 18:22

We sent over a request last week, and another one today. Nothing back yet.
