Depends what type of character you're playing. If you're going for stealth, they're all terrible, blowing your cover and blocking doorways like nobody's business

Otherwise they're all much of a muchness, providing pretty much the same blend of additional firepower and distraction. The only ones who really stand out from the crowd are Lydia (free, acquired early in the game), Shadowmere (free, practically invincible, a horse) and Barbas (invincible, a talking dog)

As SJH says, it largely depends on your playing style - there's no "must have".

Personally, I tend to get up close and personal with opponents (with a combination of melee and magic) so I find a ranged (archer) companion to be a good accomplice.
That said, though, they're likely all the same - I could probably just give a bow & arrow to any companion.
They wouldn't all have Aela's hourglass figure, though...

As mentioned elsewhere, it's worth bearing in mind that you can access your companion's inventory - so if you can persuade a trainer to accompany you it's definitely worth considering. You pay them to train you, then you take your money back from them...
