Hopes were high for The Conduit, it was supposed to be the game that showed that the Wii could do high quality, first person shooters as well as the rest of the platforms. It is currently available from HMV for just £17.99 – over £10 cheaper than the next best price from a retailer who has it in stock.
This price is for the Special Edition of the game which includes a hints and tips guide, special embossed packaging and three unlockable in-game items: “re-skinned all-seeing eye”, “Agent skin” for multiplayer and “Drone” skin for single player.
The game is set in the not-too-distant future, in an alien-invaded Washington D.C. The eponymous conduits are used by the Drudge (the aliens) to get their people about the city. You take on the role of Agent Michael Ford, dispatched by the shadow government agency to investigate and defuse a terrorist threat
So is it the great FPS that Wii owners deserve? Errr, not quite, that would be Metroid Prime 3. The Conduit has had some great reviews and some damning ones but the majority of reviewers find it so-so. This is how I found it. The controls are undeniably great and rightly praised but this is hardly the key to a fantastic game. It all just feels like a real shame because there is a lot of technical brilliance here but it is all let down by a very uninspiring setting and artwork that fails to thrill.
It's not a terrible game by any means but it feels like a real missed opportunity - The Conduit is a fair game when it could have been a truly great game.
