Darksiders was a surprisingly impressive new IP that essentially blended brutal hellish combat with Zelda-style dungeon crawling. However, a bevy of more deserving and worthwhile titles has made many gamers wait for the magical sub-£10 level before taking the plunge... and it's finally happened. Play.com are stocking the Xbox 360 version for £9.99, which will save you a fiver compared to Amazon (the next cheapest retailer).
Accidentally tricked into starting Armageddon a mite early, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse has to both set things right and get revenge on his betrayers. Luckily, the horseman in question is War (rather than, say, Pestilence)- and Darksiders challenges you to step into his armoured boots and kick some serious demon ass. Oh, and solve some serious demon puzzles. To help, he's got a sword the size of a Vauxhall Ventora, a bunch of nifty gadgets and a thoroughly disturbing (if helpful) sidekick voiced by Mark Hamill.
Whilst the Zelda-style dungeon crawling lacks the pixel-perfect intricacy of its inspiration, Darksiders is still worth checking out. Revisiting levels with new abilities and upgrading War's equipment is always a blast- and the combat firmly sticks to the fun side of simplistic. Ripping demons apart at the end of a long combo is especially satisfying! Darksiders may lack the punch of some of last year's established IPs- but if you've got some time to kill and a tenner in your bank account, Darksiders will definitely make it go a long way.
