"Deal With It": Microsoft Studios Creative Director Defends "Always-Online"

The dangers of an always-connected society is that you can never be too sure who's listening in. Of course in the case of public virtual conversations and declarations, the answer is everybody.

Which is why Microsoft Studios' creative director Adam Orth might regret not being a little more circumspect perhaps regarding his recent defence of always-connected hardware.

"Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console,” Orth said on Twitter. “Every device now is ‘always on’. That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit.”

A response from BioWare designer Manveer Heir channelled the obvious, zeitgeist-grasping reaction: “Did you learn nothing from Diablo III or SimCity? You know some people’s internet goes out right? Deal with it is a shitty reason.”

It's worth noting that the two are good friends, and that the back and forth waas a bit of banter, with Heir doing a little bit of damage limitation with the following tweet:

“You should know we [Heir and Orth] are good friends who joke around with one another. Don’t read too much into our back & forth… All those tweets you are seeing about the city being superior. That’s him just trolling me. And I fell for it. Don’t bust his balls on that.”

That may, but it doesn't really change Orth's original comment regarding always-online. Given that Microsoft are yet to announce anything regarding their next generation console, and given that gamers have been up in arms recently regarding the increasing prevalence of always-on experiences, one might suggest that Orth was perhaps a little naive to make such a statement using a medium that allows for little by way of sarcasm or inflected humour. Coming from Joe Bloggs, it might not be particularly noteworthy. Coming from the lead of a platform manufacturer's in-house dev studio is something completely different.

It's important to note that Orth's tweets are by no means whatsoever a confirmation of anything at all. But perhaps Microsoft should actually bother to announce something, before any more of their top staff piss off parts of their fanbase with controversial statements surrounding a currently lava-hot topic.

Orth's protected his tweets (stable door shut, horse already bolted), but you can check out the full exchange over here on NeoGAF. Meanwhile, parts of the internet have already responded, with YouTube favourite Francis getting really, really angry. Use headphones, it's definitely NSFW.

You see, always-on is such a fiery topic that it doesn't take much to provoke some rather extreme reactions. And surely the last thing Microsoft want people thinking is that "the PS4 is winning the [console race] just by showing up and not being assholes."

Thanks Gematsu.

So if your internet goes down or you want to use it in a room that doesn't have connection then you are s*** out of luck.

Microsoft are such a joke! The 360 didn't even come with built in wireless, now they are going always on.

Dumb.

Remember guys, this is still very much an UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOUR as far as the next Xbox is concerned.

But until Microsoft gets off their proverbial and actually reveals something, these rumours are all we have. And they're hurting MS badly.

That Francis guy's username on Xbox Live is PapaMase29. I've seen him around a few times and he's ALWAYS angry! lol

I still reckon it's going to be always on as in "if there's an internet connection available, then it'll be constantly taking advantage of it" rather than DRM-like "if there's no internet connection, the box will lock itself down".

I do think Adam Orth's comments where intended in humour but he really hasn't done them himself any favours. Plus, he is the "creative" director - he's unlikely to actually have a say (or interest) on that sort of functionality.

It seems like these companies are focusing entirely on the few that just don't want the always-on crap, and are completely ignoring all those that CAN'T use it. As mentioned above, what about all of those people that have their console in a room without a connection, or at least a decent one? What if they don't have wireless? What if they live in an area that just doesn't have decent broadband?

Do they believe that these people will rush out and buy all the necessary equipment, and remodel their homes, just so they can then buy an advert-driven, where-the-hell-have-you-hidden=my-games-this-time box 720?

Deal with it? Seriously? Okay. I'll ldeal with it. I'll deal with it by not buying your console. Taa daa!!!

That would be perfect, if that is the case. We will see.

Man, Francis is so funny. I wouldn't know what to do if I met him. Part of me would want to shake his hand the rest of me would want to push his fat **** to the ground, just to light his fuse.

The laughable things were his justifications for always on. I think he may need reminding that vacuum cleaners need electricity to function, a single player game does not need an online connection to function, nor if the power went out does the cleaning you've done so far with said vacuum miraculously unclean itself and leave you back at the beginning!

PapaMase29 isn't Francis! PapaMase29 is some idiot who spends his life playing Age Of Booty and yelling at the other players. Francis doesn't even play that stupid game!
