Dealspwn Announcement: Gamesbase Beta: Video Game Price Comparisons!

Emma Kelly
Dealspwn, Gamebase

We'd like to introduce you to a work-in-progress here on Dealspwn, Gamebase. Basically, it's a price comparison tool for video games, with prices from many UK retailers. The tool has only just been launched and is in the beta stages right now. We've only got a few games on there at the minute, all games that have been recently posted on Dealspwn. But over the coming weeks, we hope to build that database up to the thousands of video games out there!

We're also combining this with a widget which you will notice in some Dealspwn posts. You can see a good example here, on the Operation Flashpoint review. Our widget shows you the best price for this game, on all platforms available.

We do have a lot of work to do on the price comparison tool, and a few cool features to add.

  • Currently, it doesn't check stock levels, but we will be implementing that feature soon.
  • We will also be adding a historical price checker, which will be used when we have a lot more data collected on game prices over time.
  • We will be adding email alerts, so you can be notified when there is a major price drop on a game that you are interested in.
  • We'll also be adding a reporting feature, so you can point out any issues you might find.
  • Additionally, the basic list of games in the left sidebar will be replaced with a search function, and filtering by game platforms.

We hope that someday, Gamebase @ Dealspwn will be your first stop for video game price comparisons.

If you have any comments, feel free to speak below, or drop us an email.

You seem pretty good for boxed version stores, but your catalogue of Digital Distribution stores is currently woeful. For example, Need for Speed: Shift only has Steam listed, and I know it's currently available as a digital version from at least EA Store, Direct2Drive, GamersGate and Game as well.

Oh, and your logo for '365 games' appears to be an old one, their site uses a quite different one.

Some features that the current price checkers don't have that would be nice are:

Grouping together different editions of the same game, e.g. nobody should buy the original edition of Oblivion currently listed and it'd be nice if you could point to the collection edition (whatever it's called).

Listing retailer bonuses and pre-order items as the cheapest isn't always the best value.

I don't know how it's implemented, so I don't know if these are feasible.

I guess you do plan to provide links to money off vouchers for the retailers and sort/highlight accordingly as well as links to HUKD Deals possibly related to that game.

We've been concentrating on getting the boxed versions up and running, we plan to add more of the digital distribution at some point too.

Thanks for the note about 365 games, I'll look into that.

I agree that some sort of linkage between different editions would also be good. Linking to, and taking vouchers into consideration is also something we should look at :)

And thanks for your comments.

EDIT - sorted 365games logo, added direct2drive for starters

I am always trying to look for good games at good prices and i once tried a site (forgot what it was called) supposedly compared prices for you of where to best buy from. But from what i can remember i couldn't see any comparisons, so i just gave up and resorted to checking the sites or retailers i know separately.

But your Gamebase tool for me is what i will be using in the future once its up and running properly. You guys already post good game's deals separately, but this will be alot better for people out there, as all the popular games will in a collective form for people to check out.

I would like to see a ratings system for the retailer's being compared, of how they fair interms of reliability, customer services, delivery times etc. Because at times on HUKD the members always say 'oh this retailer is unreliable', 'avoid at all costs', 'i had my debit card details used fraudulently' etc.

At times i see some deals posted on HUKD from retailers iv never heard of even though its they're great deals. So i think shall i buy from that retailer even though iv never heard of them.

Like EndlessWaves said about having links to money off vouchers or detailing the codes (like HUKD) that can be used to have money knocked off will be a good thing. About the Digital Distribution stores is a good one, because STEAM do some good deals at times.

Thanks for your views Rimz.

Regarding the merchant ratings, I doubt it would be something that could be implemented here, but I'll bring it up with the people in power and see what they say :)
